This year they mixed sand in with the road salt in Kent(UK). It gets everywhere and its just taken me 3 hours to clean it all off the bike after a paltry 40 mile trip. Oh, and not only does the stuff get into every crevice on the bike, but it lurks on road bends just where you want to lean the bike over - only a matetr of time before someone drops a bike because of this stuff.

Now where the ****** am I?

It's been a fact of life for as long as I remember here in New England!! I loved to see the street sweepers out in the spring but now with cutbacks, they wait for the rain to wash the sand and salt away!!

Noticed the same here, once the salt dissolves there is black grit all over the roads. I dont ride my America on salted roads.

Yup, they do it here too Alan. Like Stephen I don't ride until all the salt and most of the sand is washed away.

they do that here in WI. also they have taken to spraying a salt brine all over the place. I suspect that this is a plan to increase auto sales as the cars will completly disolve after a few winters abuse.
bikes at hidden away until after the heavy rains of spring come.

No salt here. They use some ineffective environmentally safe synthetic chemical. You’d think that salt would be more natural and safer for the environment than some chemical. I know it’s more effective that that silly chemical they use. Luckily we only get ice on the roads a handful of times throughout winter. The rest of the time it’s just rain.

By May I will have about 250 lbs of sand in my driveway that washes in off the road with the spring thaw. Just the joy of winter in New England(and the 6 inch deep potholes). It also makes springtime corners real interesting.

Careful now guys... this thread could be used against you should one of us over here wind up loosing it because one of you 'pushed us over the edge' so to speak. That's right, you could be held liable if for example, a person from an Cabin Fever area displays extreme bouts of insanity by bolting all kinds of lights to the front of his motorcycle! Another thing people have been known to do under the effects of severe Cabin Fever is post videos of perverse Scandinavian men taking pictures of transsexual Scandinavian amazon women wearing nylons amongst mannequins scattered about in provocative poses.
Left alone and not teased, poked or prodded a man with Cabin Fever might make it to Spring without any outward signs of distress. But have friggin' dudes from Down Under rub it in just when the sufferer is about to snap? Not a good idea. Greg and others know exactly what I'm talking about so, BACK OFF!
Meanwhile, I just went outside in the night and low and behold it was 8° C out there and I tell you what, I could feel Spring in the air!!!
Live to love, love to live.

Thanks Keith for that training lesson in CABIN FEVER to our "Down Under Friends"......insensitive lot. And given the number of unnatural occurances they have received for being so uncaring , you would think they learned their lesson....but no!
PS - "Down Under" doesn't necessarily mean Australian.....Steve!

No salt, no sand. They clear off the streets used by the local politicians and it's buggar-all for the rest of us.
Let's hope there's intelligent life somewhere in space 'cause it's buggar all down here. -- Monte Python

Here in Las Vegas there are no salt nor sand trucks. We depend on the desert winds to move the sand onto the roadways.
When it does watch out. There is nothing like powering out of a curve whilst the bike is leaning over at a steep angle and hitting a 20 foot long patch of sand a half inch deep.
Big surprise!
Then we also have wild horses and donkeys that reside in the desert and will wander onto the roadways at night. Big surprise!
We have had some days out here on desert roads where you cannot ride a bike at all. Sixty mile and hour winds with blowing sand and tumbleweeds make for a real adventure.

Geeze, I don't know Dan. It's getting reeeeeeeeeeeeeal hard to believe your stories! Now if you had said, "when desert sand gets mixed in with oil from an engine with no drain plug, that's when it gets real treacherous" then it woulda made this AND that OTHER story more plausible.
