On this day in 1968 January 1St Evel Knievel jumped an amazing 150 ft Fountain jump on a 550cc bonneville Triumph.

He must have had a special 550cc engine built.

I am not 100% sure but I think he rode a 650 that day. If it was in fact a 500 it would have been a Daytona if it was a twin carb bike. Everything I have ever seen though says he owned 2 650s during that time and no 500s.

There was another guy that jumped that fountain successfully and even did a flip while he did it but it wasn't on an old Triumph or HD or any other street bike for that matter. Not nearly as impressive when done on a machine with all that suspension travel and built for that sort of thing.

Yep, from what I recall, it was a 650 TT Special.

(...oh, and btw...ALSO in the year 1968, a certain catchphrase made popular by Don Adams in the TV sitcom Get Smart of, "Missed it by THAT much!", might also be of some interest in this regard TOO!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I think that you could only say that he jumped it if he landed it successfully.

The definition would be the one that pilots use, "a good landing is one that you walk away from" (or something like that).

He didn't.

I know, I was there. And BTW, it was in 1967. Dec 31.

I like your definition. After all, anybody could strap themself to a rocket or anything else and land on the other side alive, claiming that they had "jumped" the obstacle. Sure, they would have to have big Kahuna's. But that's not "jumping".

Listen, pops, the old farts tend to violate the AUP more than the whippersnappers.

True, Bill. But, at least these puppies on this site seem to have an appreciation for "The Classics"...as in classically styled motorcycles, of course!

(...yep, ya gotta at least give 'em that!)
