Our beloved Boxer Lily was shot to death right in front of us yesterday. Our grandkids are devistated as are we both traumatized and devistated. We went to the animal shelter in hopes to find a new family member more for the twins than us as it seems too soon for us. We met a wonderful very big dopey pitbull that we fell in love with and should be on the way home this weekend. I am typing this through tear filled blurry eyes. We tried to find a name that will fit and first was Brutus, but no, then Rufus, again no, then Bozo, again no. I think we have settled on Dudley, it seems to fit his personality. I am trying to look at this as Lilys misfortune and tragedy is an oportunity for Dudley to have a good family and Christmas. Lily was only 3 and did not die outright, I held her head and stroked her as she bled out. I hope we can be strong and give our grandkids a good Christmas.

I am so sorry you lost your beloved Lily. It's not clear what happened but it sounds very traumatic. Hopefully Dudley will help ease the pain.

I'm just happy to hear that our dog went to the pound,
not the pokey. Keep strong Ian, perhaps there is a
meaning. Turn, Turn, Turn.

Give the naming time, the pet will usually name itself. It was a couple of months 'till my boxer showed her tendency to look at us out the side of her eye in a way that got her named Lucy for the 50's TV show.

I do hope you shot back.

That is brutal. I'm sorry man. I have a white boxer and a jack russel. If someone shot my dog, I'm pretty sure I'd murder them.

Thank you all very much, just had to vent here as we are devastated. It was a wrongful shooting and excessive use of force by the cops. Wendy had been having trouble with a neighbor who called about Lily being loose. There was none else outside except Lily and Wendy and I trying to herd her back in the house. We had Lily in Wendys front lawn when the cop stopped. He stopped 150' up the road and got out gun drawn. Lily took off his direction and we started yelling for him to get back in his car so we could get her back in the house, The cop instead walked to the back of his car and shot Lily while we watched. It was not a clean kill either Lily lived a few minutes and died in my arms as she bled out. She would not have hurt him but he never gave her the chance. The worst part for me is that she jerked out of my hands to get loose in the first place so I blame myself, if I had held tighter she might still be alive today. The cop had plenty of time to get back in his car and no one was in danger or even out except us. There was no reason to shoot her. I see it in my head still, it was very traumatic and I cried several times at work today. Looks like tomorrow is the day we pick him up although it looks like he won't be Dudley now since one of Wednys friends has a daughter whos last name is Dudley. Still trying to figure out a name. My granddaughter keeps saying she wants her Lily back, my grandson seems to have accepted that she is in heaven with our other dogs who have passed playing and having a good time until we can come be with her too.

I'm so sorry to hear of your tragic loss. I can't even imagine how I would feel if something like that happened to my dog. As far as a name for the new canine member of your family, I've always though the name Seamus would be cool for a dog (pronounced shay-mus).

He is a big male dopey pitbull and we are trying to find something that reflects that. Thank you for your sympathy it is very hard. All name suggestions are welcome as we have not decided yet not sure if we will by tomorrow or not.

Hmm, I'm fostering a dog right now that's a big goofball...I've nicknamed him Dweezil. Maybe that's a name to consider.

That is terrible that it happened the way it did. You cannot blame yourself Ian as Lily was only doing what is natural. Its a shame that the Police seem to shoot first and ask questions later over there. I bet he didnt even apologise the coward.
As for a name for the new pup, it should be named by someone in your family. Having said that I will throw one out there..."Dingo".
All the best Mate.

I thought it was bad when I was growing up, playing with my dog in the yard (no leash law at the time), the mailman was delivering a package so my dog ran over to him,WAGGING his tail (my dog wasn't barking or even growling at him) and I told the mailman that he doesn't bite but he sprayed him with mace. I hope the cop didn't aim his gun in your direction in order to shoot Lily.

I like Harley but the pit I had before the 2 I have now was named Harley.

My neighbor and friend had a German Shepard that was one of the nicest dogs I ever met and used to strange people since they own a junkyard and the dog is there all the time. The meter reader that came there sprayed him with mace when he went over to say hello. Same as you describe, tail wagging so hard his whole back end was going side to side.

Speaking of pit bulls, Baby, who we rescued from a backyard puppymill, came into the bedroom this morning. She spotted herself in a mirror and immediately sat down admiring herself. She's grown up to be a big bundle of love, only weighed 2 lb. at 8 weeks when we got her.

Can't even imagine what you must be going through. Wow, what a jerk of a cop...you know it wouldn't have been all that hard to just get in his car and let you handle Lily, but I know you've thought of that. I'm so very sorry.

Damit is the name my husband suggested but with little ones around that probably won't work. I like Bowzer. All my best.

Ian, Do i even need to say anything after the big conversation we just had about keeping your dogs contained, safe, and out of trouble.....Sorry about what has happened to your dog, I hate that that happened, but it is up to you to keep them out of harms way.

Yea it was the cops fault? he had a dog running at him full speed and people screaming at him to back and get in his car.
No one knows how they would handle that unless its happened to you, and i dont know if I would call ALL cops criminals, bit of a blanket statement there

There are plenty of a-hole cops out there, and this guy might be one of them, but this statement is ridiculous. I'll ask one my riding buddies, a sheriff's deputy, what he thinks.

EDIT: Did Ron chime in yet? I don't remember.

Mike's comment probably wasn't all that well thought out. I'm sure you don't mean what you said about ALL cops, right Mike? Angelis, one of our members here just might disagree.
