Last night the band performed at a roadside pub some 2 hours from here. The gig went well, getting us (me) home at around 1:30am. I was tired... very tired and decided to unload all the equipment in the Jeep after morning coffee.

WRONG!! The next morning revealed a broken window in the Jeep and most of the musical equipment was friggin' gone. Adding insult to injury when I went to move the Jeep, the ignition had been pried and broken and the key no longer worked. I guess the thieves figured, "hey, let's just take the whole vehicle so we don't have to unload it!"

I have car insurance. "We're sorry sir but that insurance covers your vehicle, not the contents. Check with your home insurance." Okay... so Monday I'll check with those guys to see if I can get replacement money for all the equipment and instruments. Meanwhile, the band is on hold until further notice. Sucks!!!

I hate that sh!t. The worst thing is that if they catch them and thats a big IF they will just get a slap on the wrist. like 2 years probation. Instead of shot as they should be.

Dude that's terrible. Sorry to hear you got jacked. Your homeowners should cover it, but you probably still have a deductible... Those effin thieves will get what's coming to them...

My homeowners would cover it. But absolutely do not tell them you were playing a show. As far as they know you decided to store it in your jeep for the evening. If your insurance is like mine musical instruments used outside the house are considered professional equipment and that is a different insurance policy.

That sucks man, the violated feeling and loss a security really suck. More so than the loss of the items. My house was broken into twice and it took me a long time to be able to leave it again and even then I was always worried.

You're right Ian... I feel violated. I WAS VIOLATED!! Yet it could have been worse. For example, my truly personal friend called my acoustic guitar which is worn in nearly as much as that of Willie Nelson's, road home in buddy's car. I still have THAT in my possession thankfully.

I can't believe this news, Keith! Hopefully that homeowners comes through. It's ashamed there are people like those crooks in the world that find some reason to take from others. Keep us informed on how things work out.

That's terrible and I know I you feel....

I hate it when some low-life figures it can take away stuff for free from honest hard working people.

And look around...

Often, the thieves are locals or even next door neighbors...
How else would they know you left your stuff in the car on that night?

That might be what they would do. Would thought you would recognize the stuff ok. Hope it works out ok matey. atb geoff

Sorry to hear about this Keith. The monetary loss of your equipment is one thing but your loss of your sense of security is another. I hope you have some serial #s or something to ID your equipment.Hopefully the insurance co. will cover what was loss.
Paranoid of everybody going by your house will take a while to subside. Like you said your self, "when one door closes, another one opens", Time to upgrade your equipment!

Unfortunately there are scum like that everywhere. To think that a province that is so beautiful could have people so ugly..... Good luck Keith with the insurance claim. Can you also claim loss of any income while things are being compensed or is that also considered "professional" and not covered?

It's a bad deal Keith,

Parked outside your house I presume? My old friend Moki Larry worked coastal BC law enforcement back in the 30's. He always said common thieves were his "least favourite" class of criminal. With any luck the local autorities (and you) will catch a break.

Time to round up a posse.

Actually, I hope your stuff was unique enough that it will be spotted by your friends. It's actually a good feeling to follow up on a tip, going right up to the scum and letting them know you're here to collect!

Heading down to the insurance company tomorrow and will keep you all posted. Meanwhile I have to get the Jeep running again (will see what it's like to pull the broken ignition switch) so I can do some running around to the pawn shops, insurance broker, auto wrecker for a new window, etc. Hopefully I can get the thing started without too much trouble.

Some people do not deserve to be called human.

Especially those who will steal a persons means to make a living. Or the equipment needed for a second income/very enjoyable hobby

as a musician who owns a lot of equipment I feel for you dude. I'd be furious especially cause its just puts a huge damper on your band.

Keep us posted though, I'd like to hear what happens in the end with the insurance and whatnot cause its always been something I worried about.

Dont know if youre a metallica man, but back when they were touring and writing new material for the album "ride the lightning" They got their van broken into and totally lost everything in the middle of nowhere. James Hetfield wrote the song "fade to black" based on that experience and it ruled.

So hopefully you can draw some inspiration from this if anything. A suffering artist is a productive one.

Fade to black would be one hel of a cover as well.

I appreciate you sharing that story about Metalica, Tom... it kinda made me feel better. I'll have to look into "Fade to Black." Meanwhile I have to shake of this depression and get on with things. Today I'll try to get the ignition switch out so I can run the Jeep... then head down to the insurance people and maybe even write a song about the ordeal on my acoustic.

Ya know... my band mate talked about how they didn't just steal stuff, but part of all our livelihoods. He's NOT someone you want to p!ss off!!!

What is amazing to me is that live on a quiet little dead end street up where nobody is just "cruising by".
Whomever took your stuff knew you had it, and was just waiting for the right time to take it.
I think all of us musicians at one time or another have decided we didn't want to unload after a show.
Honestly, where your house is located and that you know your neighbors is just disgusting.
If there is anything I can do, like help with value of gear (my guitar players own a new/used guitar shop)let me know.

Take Care,

~Brent

I agree Brent... somebody knew. Meanwhile I'm optimistic my house insurance will come through. Admittedly I'm a space cadet and don't file things like pictures, serial #s, model #s and so on. Yet the insurance agent left me with a good feeling. "Just let us know what it's worth to the best of your knowledge and..." I think they will come through with a dollar amount that will get me going again. HEY, ya gotta be optimistic, right?

Thanks Brent for you kind offer to help out. As soon as I know what I have to work with I'll let you know and we can take it from there. Meanwhile I've had a few more Scotches than usual over the last couple o' days but what the heck... who's counting!! AND, I'm having visions of relocating to a more rural setting... just thinkin' out loud. The Winds of Change just might be blowing.
