Hi all !
Does somebody fit another front sprocket than the stock one (I don't know exactly how many teeth the stock have) ?
Is it a good thing to do ?
If so, why do you choose the 16 teeth sprocket or 17, 18 or 19 ?

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, Stock for the Speedie is 17, for the BA is 18. I have the 16 tooth sprocket for the low end grunt(great if you stop and start alot ie. in traffic). The 19 is great for the highway, it lowers the motor's RPM's while at highway speed.

Thanks all.
Is it really different riding 19 teeth sprocket ? I mean : I think the gears are too short . I have to change gear very quickly and 5e gear comes and I ever look for a 6e. So I would have gears longer and change gear later (I hope you've understood). Then I thought replace the sprocket.
Is it hard to fit ? If I mount a 19 teeth sprocket, do I have to change the chain ?
@satxron : sorry but I do not understand "will never run anything but."

I have the 18 and I love it.
Steven, it depends on what year. If I remember right... Fom 02-06 the America had the 17 tooth and the Speedmaster had 16. From 07-present they both have 17.
Thierry, you can go up to 19 teeth and not worry about changing the chain length.

I don't use my bike for drag racing or fast starts. I also can't stand searching for that 6th gear because it revs too high. The 19, to me, makes is a very low RPM cruiser. It takes a very little bit of time to change the primary. Fast Eddy sells them for a little bit of money. With a 19 you are cruising over 70MPH under 4000 RPM. All gears are much taller. Downside, no drag racing. First gear is very tall so slow off the line. Try moving up, if you don't like you really spent very little money and effort.

For me the 18 is good, because I dont think I have lost too much off the line, and on the freeway I am not looking for that non-existant 6th gear. 4250 rpm at an indicated 80 mph.

It depends a lot on your riding style and circumstance. I ride in the city most of the time with some road trips of up to 400 miles. When I get into twisty roads I like to keep my RPM up around 4000 rpm for the fun factor. The 16 tooth fits me just fine. I've even considered going to a 43 or 44 tooth rear (stock is 42) for more low end performance. with a 7900rpm rev limit it handles the highway very well. I also weigh 250 lbs (113 kg).

mine was stock with a 16, rode that for 2 years, went to a 18 for about a year, then to a 17, I think i like the 17 best. It is all a personal preferrence and riding style.

I run a 19 - great for the kind of riding I do (Cherohala Skyway, Devil's Triangle, Highways). Kind of a pain for low speed manouvers, but it's worth it as I no longer search for 6th. I also added the Drag Specialties tach recently - turns about 4k at interstate speeds.

Early Speedys had a 16t and early Americas had a 17t stock.

Thank you all for feedbacks.
I've just make an order for both 18 and 19 tooth front sprocket That's not a lot of money. That way, I'll fit the one that works better for me.(gears not so taller and keep some power at start)

If you're currently running a 17, you will definitely notice a difference going to an 18. Each tooth makes a very noticeable difference. My bike came with a 17 and I changed after a year to 18 and never went back. With the 18 I don't find myself looking for 6th at all. There are times I wish I had the 17 for the fun quick starts and riding 2-up. But, I much prefer the 18 and have no trouble riding 2-up. The 19 would be way too tall for me and I don't want to give up any more off the line quickness.
Try the 18 first. You really have to ride in different conditions for awhile to know if it is the best for you.

...and I like the 16 since I live in a place with hills and twisties I like to ride.I also love the low end grunt I get with the 16. I also run long distance a few times a summer and have no issues doing so at 80mph to a little over 100mph with sustained indicated speeds around 90mph.

I still searched for a 6th gear with the 18t as much as do now with the 17t. I changed the stock 16t for the 18t after the first 7k miles, but I never "disliked" it, just thought lower rpms made more sense since I'm on the highway 90% of the time, but funny thing is, I never realized any difference in gas mileage from one to the other.
I'll need a new chain again soon, and I'm going to change the sprockets too this time. I'll go back with the 16t front for a while. I can always change it later if I want.
The 17t I have now has been on for a good 40k, and it has been a lot of fun.
I do think the 19t would be a bit too tall, especially 2-up, but that's just my opinion.
I will say that I did like running the 18t in the lower gears. Seemed like I could run 1st and 2nd gear a lot more at speeds less than 50 mph.....but it had less on the top end in 5th.
With the 17t, I'm not going to ever run anywhere near rev limit in 5th gear. EVER.

Ok guys, here is the truth : TA 2009 EFI front sprocket is 18 Teeth (Stock one) I was not lucky today, because I ordered a 18 teeth sprocket (following advices here ...). So I unmounted the sprocket in order to change it and .... WHAT ???? WTF ???? the sprocket I want to replace has same number of teeth !! By now, I have to order again (I canceled the 19 T I've ordered first because it was on backorder - should wait 2 weeks)

Hello Frenchy, 1)I think someone may have changed your Stock to a 18 tooth unless you bought it new; 2)I watched your enjoyable video and got the impression that you shift up at very low engine speed compared to me - it took me awhile to realize the TR engine likes to rev compared to something like a Harley; 3)I had a 19T and changed down to an 18T sprocket because going slow on a steep city road, even my first gear was too tall and shook the entire drive line badly due to the slow rpm's. I find the 18 to be a good compromise and even when accelerating I find plenty of engine speed headroom before shifting up

Thank you for feedback jim5968
I bought the America as a new bike. Could be possible that Triumph Motorcycles company, change for a 18 tooth sprocket with 2009 Model.
Anyway, I would to change to 1 more tooth because I always looking for a 6e gear.
About 2: Sometimes I do not understand technical language in english but I suppose you mean "I could run longuer with the same gear before changing to the next one ?"

I bought my 2009 Speedmaster new as well. According to Bikebandit's parts diagram and list, it shows I have a 18 tooth sprocket as stock.

The engine revolutions are less at any given speed with the sprocket with more teeth. My 04 SM had a 16 tooth sprocket stock but they did put the bigger one on the newer models. Not sure what year they made the change.

Have run 17-18 and 19 t sprockets. Have stuck with 19t as a lot of my riding is long distance and on reasonable roads where you can hold a decent speed. If I was riding in traffic most of the time etc would go no higher than the 18t. Find that third handles the windys pretty well with the higher gearing and use 2nd for built up areas.

Hi all, Finally, I replaced the front sprocket with a 19T one. That rocks ! I stopped looking for for 6th gear. Now gears are taller. Downtown, I do not go with 5th gear so often. On highway, it's nice, the bike run well, and I go with 5th gear later. Of course , the bike is a little more "massive" at startup. It's more significant while riding with a passenger, so I have to be more careful but I got used with that now. I'll keep the 19T. Of course, I made a billet about the sprocket replacement here (in french, but pictures will help you) : Mounting of the 19T front sprocket

Not bad translated with Chrome
I try to write the billets with a few humor. Not sure the english version retains this. Anyway,I have a lot of fun doing this site and coming here too.

There are certain things in life that one can see, taste, feel or experience which have that quality of universal desirability and appreciation.
The Triumph Bonneville is firmly on that limited list.

I have a 19T front and yes, the bike does feel like it is under quite a load coming out of the hole with me (I'm 3 bills) and a passenger who is right at a buck and a half...that's 450 pounds of riders! It sure is nice to be cruising 60-65 MPH and only be at 3K-3.2K...If I had to do more city driving 2 up I would go back down to a 17, but for rural riding (which is mostly what I do) or city riding solo, the 19T works. Just have to really be aware of it when navigating around in traffic, I keep finding that 2nd isn't always as easy to use moving about in slow city traffic as it was on other bikes or configs. I have to go find 1st gear more often than you'd think. Maybe I should shed some poundage...
