So... does it pop up with the flip of a switch? Is that a small linear actuator under there? Interesting idea.

It's released by hand.
A linear actuator with enough holding power was getting to big use without carving the seat up, raising the pillion more than what looked normal or modifying the fender.
I wanted to build something that is "Bolt On", no IQ required.
I do have a 2" stroke actuator for sale if your interested.

What a cool idea. Looks too tall for my back though, but the concept is fantastic!! Good job are you an engineer??? But to be honest the dog is cuter!!!

That's sitting on a hydrolic isn't it? Looks pretty innovative for sure. If that is a hydrolic, what is that mounted to?

Are you talking about the dog's other ear or the pillion/back rest???

Very nice work there Lester, and those welds look first-rate too.
As it features a similar concept, did you happen to get the idea for this from the recent BMW Cruiser model?
(and yep, that pup o' yours is nice lookin' too!)

No not from BMW, but i would like a link to check it out.
Mine came from a sore back, plus having to throw my leg(higher than normal) over the bike or create a type of dance to get between tank and rest without scratching the paint because theres a permanently mounted backrest 12 inches high to get over
servo was first method,,,then gas spring(no one would send free samples),,then this unit, which is used in your cars seat back.

Re the BMW R1200C info, here ya go, Lester. http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/bmw/bmw_r1200c.htmAnd I know what you mean about "the dance" when you attempt to mount a bike which has a backrest and/or a duffle placed behind the seat. It can be quite a stretch sometimes to throw the leg over those. And, if it can be pulled up behind you after you're already on the bike, then it would definitely make "the dance" unnecessary, alright!

Dang. you can burn a rod or two! Nice work. Great idea too. but, and this is the kind that can be huge, when the backrest is deployed, the thing is FUGLY. Damnit jim I'm an engineer not picasso!

Great idea. Like you said I can see the back of the seat covered but I also see the frame work that is mounted to the fender chromed. Edit: does it change the height the seat? If so how much?

It's 1 1/4 inches higher than stock.
1/2 to 3/4 inch if i build it into the seat, then i would use the servo.
And yes it does look fugged up. but ya can't see it when your riding.
Might have to bring it forward a little,,,,still R&D'n.
What if the pillion was turned 180 degrees? Fug the passenger,,,i'm first!

Hey man I like it, if you can make it about six inches higher you could use it as a headrest. Good work guy!

I have a buddy at work who bought a BMW R1200C for his wife. I like the pillion/backrest of it,,,,,,gonna have to take some pic's of it. Looks like the way to go,,,,, The major challange is MAKING the seat, slash backrest. And making it right. Mines comfy and all but it looks like,,,,,,,crap Oh ya,,,,,,,,,,,here's the other dog He's an oversize pomerainien(17 lbs). He'll let ya know there's a burgler in the house AFTER they've left the house,,,,does'nt like to be bothered
