arrived last night at 18:20. Little Gus weighed in at 8 lbs, 10 oz. He's having some problems breathing, and so a chest tube was inserted last night. The doctors don't seem too concerned, and I don't think they're downplaying the situation. I have to wonder if my daughter's lethargy and long term hospitalization during the pregnancy was a factor. No blame or hard feelings to that issue intended -- she did what she could with the situation.

Next step - The CT DCF (Department of Children & Families) comes in and decides Gus's future, and where he will go. My slightly unstable ex-wife would like to take him to her home in NH, and as I posted, my wife & I would like to raise him, as my daughter cannot. So far things are civil, as I don't believe my ex realizes we are in the loop. She hasn't gone off on a public rage, which is her usual course of action when things don't go her way.

Time will tell...

With four or five state agencies in the loop, we'll hope & pray for he best. In my quest to establish contact with DCF, my first call to them lead to the advice of: "You can go to probate court and file for custody."

Um, perhaps not the best nor timely advice there.

I feel better now that the hospital's social worker handling the case has plugged me into the DCF agent in charge of the next steps.

Well, congratulations and may I be the umpteenth person to call you Grandad

I'm assuming the chest tube sounds a lot worse than it is and is nothing like the picture in my head, and is more like what my daughter had as she needed a touch of oxygen when she was born

I hope things work out custody wise for you and the various departments realise that you and your wife are the best options (after all, you do ride a Triumph )

All my best to you and yours
Bryn

Congratulations Martin. Just be prepared for lots of red tape from the DCF. A friend of mine and his wife volunteered to serve as a foster parent for a two year old relative who had been abused by either his mother, father or grandmother (none of them would speak about it). My friend was awarded foster parent status, but later the birth mother and grandmother sued to get custody of the kid and would you believe it they won. The fact that this kid was placed right back into the situation where he was abused was kind of shocking to my friend, but under Massachusetts law foster parents do not have any standing under the legal system to protest. Anyway, hope your situation doesn't end up in the courts. It can get real ugly.

Stay positive man. I hope this works out for you and lil Gus.

There's just something about grandkids that makes them almost magical. My 2 year old grandaughter spends at least 3 days a week with us. Love it. Congrats on the arrival and hope things work out.

Just wait until you get to hold him for a little while....you'll find yourself talking to him saying things like, nothing bad is ever going to happen to my little grandson....nothing! Enjoy

He still has trouble breathing, but he is at Hartford Hospital, which is generally believed to be among the best neonatal care facilties in these parts.

Call it denial or whatever you want, but I have a very strong belief that he is going to be OK.
