Pat's 1999 California Beer Hunter Expedition
Stone Brewing Company
Rating out of 5 mugs =
This was a neat little brewery tucked away in the warehouse district of San Marcos, Ca, in northern San Diego County. It is strictly a brewery and they offer tastings on Saturday so we decided to visit on, that's right, Saturday! They were also having a home brew mini contest and judges were tasting away as we sampled the free Stone brews.
The brews sampled were:
- Stone Pale Ale - A very nice American Pale Ale, their most popular.
- Stone IPA - VERY hoppy, I like it!!!
- Arrogant Bastard Ale - A high octane strong ale about 8% ABV
Overall impressions: I enjoyed all of their beers very much. I tried to get some info on the hops used but the guy serving us said it was a secret, so I looked at the hops sacks piled around (centennial and cluster were abundant). I think the response was due more to the fact he didn't know so he just said that. I also think the name "Arrogant Bastard Ale" came from the same fellow. He seemed more interested in serving his friends, much larger samples than ours too, than answering questions about the brewery to a tourist from New York. I don't hold that against the beer though, some things surpass personality deficiencies.
