I was looking over the AI removal instructions .pdf from the site and procedure V says that in a CA bike there is other emissions stuff that needs to come off. Mine is a CA bike and I need to know what else needs to go. Ideally, I'd like to not tear everything out of there if I don't have do so can I get away with just performing the AI removal and leave the rest?

Also, will I have to retune the carbs after the AI is removed? Do I have to remove the carbs to get to the mixture screws?

I did not remove the CA can or any of the hoses going down to it. It doesnt do anything but sit there, but it is there. You might want to balance your carbs and adjust the air mix. These bikes come pretty lean from the factory. I am sure the southern CA guy(s) will pipe in also

AI removal doesn't require any retuning, but you might want to redo the idle mixture anyway because it is set very lean from the factory.
The idle screws are accessable at the bottom of the carbs near the carb heater connections. Older ones have an anti tamper plug that has to be removed. Starting sometime in '04, they deleted this plug and changed to a screw that requires a special D shaped tool that you can get here. http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/d_tool.html
The rest of the emissions package has no noticable effect on performance, and it's removal can get you a tampering ticket. There is a slight advantage to leaving it in place, you get to burn the gas fumes that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere, giving your fuel economy a slight boost.

i'm with greybeard. i plugged mine off to see what it did and there was zero difference. Plus consider that you may need to reinstall it when you sell the bike, and it's comoplicated enough so that it may be hard to remember how it all goes back on. The one and only reason to remove it is just to br rid of the parts if that bothers you. but i don't think it's worth it, but thats your call. And as GB said, it may actually add to fuel economy. If you lose 1 MPG over time it can add up at todays gas prices.
