Texas will no longer have a helmet inforcement law. Instead one will have to take the rider safety coarse to get a license. The DPS will not give the class you must go to an independant riding instructor. Harley dealerships give the class monthly.

I say GOOD!!! I've NEVER thought helmet use should be mandatory!

HOWEVER, feeling as I do about helmet use(as you "may" already know Chad, I'M FOR IT, and mainly 'cause as you "may" ALSO already know, "a lid" once saved my noggin from gettin' scrambled on the asphalt a while back!), here's ya a little ditty I made up all by my lonesome here....

Bureaucrats be damned
Don't needed 'em to understand
Deep in the heart of Texas

That ridin' without a lid
Is pert near stupid
Deep in the heart of Texas

(...pretty good, HUH?!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

The next law in Texas will be to ban all foreign-made motorcycles. Heck, Harley Davidson could already be the official state motorcycle.

That was last updated in January of 2001. That was ten years ago. The law has changed sense then. The Texas portion was last updated in 1997.
Quote:

Senate Bill 1967 amends provisions of the Transportation Code pertaining to the safe operation of motorcycles and other vehicles in Texas. The bill requires the Texas Department of Transportation to conduct a continuing public awareness campaign to promote motorcyclist safety and the concept of sharing the road with motorcyclists. The bill requires an applicant for a Class M license or a certain driver's license or learner's permit that includes an authorization to operate a motorcycle to furnish to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) satisfactory evidence that the applicant has successfully completed a basic motorcycle operator training course approved by DPS. The bill establishes penalties for failure by an operator of a vehicle to yield the right-of-way to another vehicle punishable by a fine, ranging from $500 to $4,000, if a person other than the operator suffers bodily injury.

Current law requires a person be covered with a minimum of $10,000 in health insurance for injuries incurred in a motorcycle accident to be eligible for an exception for the offense of operating or riding a motorcycle without a helmet. The bill removes that minimum amount. The bill requires the Texas Department of Insurance to prescribe a standard proof of health insurance for issuance to persons who are at least 21 years of age and covered by an applicable health insurance plan.

The bill prohibits a peace officer from stopping or detaining a person who is the operator of or a passenger on a motorcycle for the sole purpose of determining whether the person has successfully completed a motorcycle operator training and safety course or is covered by a motorcycle health insurance plan and repeals provisions relating to a DPS-issued sticker required to be displayed on a motorcycle by a motorcycle owner.

Senate Bill 1967 amends the Education Code to require the Texas Education Agency to include certain motorcycle awareness information in the curriculum of any driver education course or driving safety course.

Senate summary.

The governor vetoed a similar law here in Louisiana a while back. Louisiana offers a safety course here for less than half what H-D charges for theirs.

Texas also just passed a photo ID is required to vote so they can issue your CCDW license on the way out of the polls with your state issued S&W M&P 9mm.

Limit is 4 per household.

A MAN has died after police arrested him on a street in Sydney's southwest.

Police spotted the man riding a motorised bicycle without a helmet in Campbelltown about 10.20am (AEST) today.

They say he became abusive when officers stopped him near the corner of Queen and Browne streets.

Police say that soon after they arrested and handcuffed the man, he collapsed.

The officers promptly performed CPR until an ambulance arrived and took him to Campbelltown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man has yet to be formally identified.

A critical incident investigation team will interview the police and any witnesses.

The rider safety course is free here in PA but not required. If you take it they give you a break on insurance and you can ride with no helmet right away instead of a short wait.

I think the rider safety course is a good idea, but making it $200 is a bit like they are trying to make it a deterrent.
