I joined the AMA in 1970 so I could ride enduros and hairscrambles. Back then if you stayed with them 20 years you became a life member with full benefits. After I reached my 20 year status they changed the rules and we were no longer given the magazine or news letter without paying exstra. They broke the faith with us for money.

I joined AMA last Fall to get a discount on the shipping for the Rocket III. I don't actually care about them at all, but I'm glad there's some kind of faction for motorcyclists.

I joined several years ago. They are the motorcycle equivalent of the NRA. Without them, and a few others, the nanny staters will destroy motorcycling. Plus, you get free roadside assistance.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Could be a reason to join again, I suppose.

Years ago when I went to school in Columbus, Ohio the AMA headquarters was just up the road in Worthington (I think). I remember similar discussions about the AMA back then too, but the one that stuck with me was the fellow who said he passed the AMA offices every day going to and from work and had never seen a motorcycle in the parking lot. I don't remember if I ever saw one either, but they did sponsor flat track races at the State fairgrounds every year that drew an amazing collection of riders and bikes; I think I still have photos of a sea of bikes there in the late 70s.

I can't stand the AMA for selling our rights down the road a little at a time but I think they sponsored the hill climbs at Freemansburg. Used to be a sea of bikes there too but the law pretty much squashed that. Last time I was there the field was only about 1/2 full of bikes and it used to be so full some bikes couldn't get in there to park.

I am with ya, Ian. VWV are nothing but a political group who trade us out to support their own agenda. COC is a different matter they actually have gotten laws repealed here in Texas. Ones the VWV got in forced to start with, lol.

Abate here had a lot to do with the repeal of the helmet law. Lobbied for it every year and had a large group at the state capitol to support the bill. That is just 1 example.

The AMA, and ABATE are both fighting for motorcycle rights. ABATE is geared more toward the state level (at least here in Florida that is where all their attention is), and only for on road riding. AMA is geared toward the national level and for all types of riding (on and off road). Both organizations are needed more than ever, and based on the laws passed in the last 4 years, a bigger national presents is needed.

VWV probably traded for those laws, allowing them to get passed in exchange for safety class fees or racing regulations that would make them more money.

They're as bad as insurance companies. They tell ya hey man I'm on your side. Mean while they create a need for themselves so they can make a fortune off of ya.

I have learned as of late that I neither support nor oppose any cause ,sa e for the degree in which it affects me. So if it makes you happy to join or oppose any group or cause then the world is better for having at least one happy person.
