Quick question. Should your pipes still blue with the AI removed? Like it has never run with the AI on.

Nope, they shouldn't turn blue with the AI gone. I guess there still is a chance if your air/fuel screws are too far in and causing a very lean mix.

Yep, it is possible to dis-color your headers and pipes w/ the air injection out. It can occur if your air/idle adjustments are not correct and also if your carbs are not balanced correctly. My advice would be to check out member Dinqua's link for these operations....and you can check out Pat's homebrew page as an added bonus!!!! Good luck...we've all been there...I can tell ya first hand that you can become fairly handy spinning the wrenches if you put your mind and resolve to the test and percevere!!!!!

It was in for service on this ongoing problem I have. The bike backfires, dies, and won't restart for hours or now just dies and won't start again. They rode the bike trying to replicate the problem but couldn't. The pipes were perfect when it went in, but they blued bad after the 50 miles or so they put on them. They were doing what I asked them to do, which was ride the bike, so no problems there. I'm just wondering that if the blued pipes might point to the cause of my on-going problems could be the carbs?

That could very well be. A lean mixture or exhaust leak can make the pipes run too hot.

That's what I was thinking. On Harley's blue pipes always meant something wasn't right, and those weren't double walls.
