I had always considered my TBA to have excessive valve train noise but didn't have any prior experience with Triumphs so I wasn't sure...
Last week (for the 100th time) I thought "gee, I wonder if that's exhaust leak" but this time I decided to check. Turns out all four header nuts were only finger tight! A few quick turns of the old 12mm and the bike is SO much quieter.
Nice to have the END of the exhaust be louder than the FRONT.

Yeah, I have been fighting various E-Leaks and I am very frustrated... Tightened the header bolts, twice. They seem to work loose. Bought extra clamps for the TORs to eliminate a leak on the left side. Still feel I have one. Sometimes I will start out and I can not really hear or feel a leak. As the day progresses It gets louder and performance seems to suffer.

Have you tried Loctite on the bolts?
Loctite 596 might be the answer...

Sounds like the silencers are expanding more than the pipes, or maybe the clamps are expanding more than both when they get hot.

Isn't 596 the green stuff and more of a sleeve retainer? If so I might be leary about using it. I worked with that stuff and that does not easily remove should you want too. Yes it will lock it but it will also take getting it red hot with a torch to remove it. If this isn't the stuff. "nevermind". Beavis I have plenty differnt types I can fix you up with. Hey John,
Took your suggestion re: heating things up, and then tighten. I'll bet I got 3/4 of a turn more on the right top. As you know I have complaining about the noise on the right...
Maybe I got it this time... It would be nice to go to bike nite without cussing about my overpriced Lionel Train Locomotive.

I've never been a big fan of Loctite, I've worked in the automotive industry all my life and have seen it do more harm than good. I do however use the blue loctite where the manual says I should. My header nuts work loose too but I just include snugging them up as part of my regular maintenance.

So, when replacing the stock pipes with TOR's, is there anything other than just slipping them on that I should do?
Should I expect a leak between the header and the silencer?

Pulled my headers to polish this weekend, 3 of 4 were only finger tight! Might be my imagination, but I swear the bike had more power when they were tightened properly.

Doug,
I recently removed my TORs and reinstalled the original SM silencers. There is an apparent shortness regarding the required length of the TORs at the front connection. They were shorter than the originals and allow for a leak at the connection point. I had tried to seal with RTV and experimented with a metal wrap inside the clamp. Neither made any difference. I never tried a combination of the wrap and RTV. That may cure it. In general, I was real disapointed in the TORs. The originals slide well past the TORs and seal very well. I have heard anyone complain about leaks on other aftermarket exhaust. They also may be long enough in the front.

Hey guys, I had to work hard at sealing up the TORs...
I bought a couple of "Custom Crome" Clamps. The Triumph clamps if you look at them, have an opening of about a half inch which allows an area for leakage. The Custom Chrome clamps finally sealed it up.

Doug, I got them at a cycle shop here in Jacksonville. These clamps are wider, thicker, and chrome. Much stronger. You should be able to find them at a high end cycle shop. These are the ones in the top center of the page. http://www.customchrome.com/catalogs/ccp/0694.html

Thanks Richard. I'm assuming you mean the 'aircraft-style'. Did you use the sportster or panhead version?

I guess from looking at the photo it would have been the Panhead. It tightens down nicely and looks great.
Again, you may even find something comparable at your local HD Dealership.
