Mmm. Did BMW take note of how many Bobbers Triumph has been selling? I’m not a big fan of a single purpose motorcycle. And along with that big engine will be a big price I suspect.

Looks Ok but BMW have done this sort of thing before. When the 900 with the Bikini fairing and then the "james bond" 1200 I thought both times BMW were starting to look at form as well as function but it didn't last long. This one is specifically a "bar hopper" I'd say

It's very clean and minimalistic looking, but I never could get around the giant opposed twin engine for looks.

I have a 64 R50 and would love to park one of those next to it.

Yes, I like this bike too ... lots!
Not sure how well the footpeg location works though?
Those cylinder heafs are gonna be hot, unless they have already got that covered.

To my eye the boxer twins have always looked, well, dorky.
On the other hand there is a point where something can be so dorky it's cool.
Not saying this bike looks cool but I would say that BMW is getting closer to rounding the corner.

Those massive jugs certainly dominate the look. I'm not sure I like the look but it might grow on me. Tipping one over, even in the parking lot, would likely be a VERY expensive proposition. No way crash bars would work on something that wide and low. Having your feet right behind the cylinders would keep your feet warm in the winter, I'm not sure that would be comfortable in the summer. Interesting, I'm sure we'll see some if it does in fact go into production.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

My R50 is a boxer and your feet are in the same position on that. There has never been any discomfort from heat. That being said, my R50 is only 500cc so much smaller jugs.

Yes but I am thinking that on a bike like your R50 the seating position is higher (am I right in saying this? That's how it looks to me), which should help.

I have 2 Beemers in my stable (R1100RT and a R1200GS). The jugs are bigger and during a hot day I can sure feel the heat coming off them.
Not that I have ever complained, mind you.

I wonder what they will come up with to get around that one.

I have carbon fibre cylinder head covers on my R1200GS. I don't know how effective they could be since I also have crash bars.

Yes I think protective covers would suffice for low speed or parking fall. I have seen some Moto-Guzzi that have small crash bars bolted to cylinders that may be an option. I like the bike and I liked the "James Bond 1200" It was expensive then and the new one probably will be as well.

Probably way more expensive, given the engine capacity.

They don't come any more retro and as a great homage to any motorcycle brand's history and heritage, AND in my view beautifully done, than this BMW here.

Too bad in its present form and with its low seat, my reasonably long legs would be bent at the knees more than the usual and most comfortable 90 degrees, and witnessed by how the guy riding it in that video must severely bend his knees to have feet placed on the pegs.

Of course then again I suppose making or finding a higher seat for it wouldn't be that much of a problem.

(...eeh, who am I kiddin' here...as much as I really like the looks of this bike and wouldn't mind at all adding one to my small collection of bikes, I'll probably never purchase one...still, cool as hell machine, though)

Yes, my R50 has a much higher classic seating position. I am not sure if I would want to do that to this or not until sitting on it. Doesn't matter anyway, I am sure the price is way out of what I would be willing to spend.

I just went back and watched the beginning of the video again and even the guy riding it in looks to have his knees pretty well bent. I wouldn't like that, and forward is not an option.

So, still have "Old Paint" in your stable, eh Thanassis?

Ah Sir, you have ridden her for several thousands of miles around Europe and yet you have forgotten her name?
Tut tut ...
Safra (Ali Baba's camel).

Yep Dwight ... she's still going strong.
Roughly just under 300.000 kms to date.
(I say 'roughly' because, as you will remember, the speedo cable would give up every now and again).

Oh yeah, "Safra", that's right. I do remember you telling me you named it after Ali Baba's camel, but couldn't remember the name. However, I'm sure you in turn remember me telling you that I had sort of renamed her using an American old west pet name for a favorite and reliable old horse, and that being "Old Paint".

Can't believe my time with "her" has now been 10 whole years ago. Good memories those, ol' buddy!

(...and yeah re the speedo cable...I remember stopping at that Malmo Sweden BMW dealership to have it replaced just before traveling across that long long bridge to Denmark, and while you were heading up to North Cape Norway)

It's very clean and minimalistic looking, but I never could get around the giant opposed twin engine for looks.

Agreed. But air/oil cooled? That will be a very hot engine at 1800 ccs.

One would think so.
Who knows? I can't imagine they haven't thought of that.
Otherwise some people are going to get some pretty discolored (or is that colored?) shins.

Yeah, that's what we thought about the Indian 1.8L. It runs hot. Really hot.

I always loved the look of the boxer engine myself. They cool very well with the jugs sticking out in the wind. I think it would look just as cool with a leaf spring style seat like the one on my R50. They kind of look like they are suspended in the air.

I love the looks. First thing I thought was it looked like the R5 - then he said it's R5 inspired. D'oh
Looks way too uncomfortable to me (with mid mounted pegs).

Just think of them as more like being highway peg replacements. Sort of, heated leg rests for colder climates!!

OH yeah! My Indian Springfield's Thunderstroke 111 (cu.in) engine while being one of THE most gorgeous motorcycle engines ever (and one of the primary reasons I'd purchase it) sure DOES get pretty darn hot while riding it around during the summer months.

(...what with that big ol' rear cylinder head sittin' right 'tween my thighs)

It sure is a good looking Chromehead. Maybe the heat off those cylinder heads will overcome the strain of the +90 angle of the knee for anyone over 5'8". Perhaps as an option they could add a built in Tens machine for some of us Senior riders.

It's a cool looking " custom" but I just can't see this selling big numbers.

Walkaround and start up.

Comedy walkaround and start up and reverse gear.

I like it, priced around the same as the new Rocket.

Lovely....and I thought I was the only one who liked it.
Lots of folks seem to think it ugly.
To me it harks back to earlier BMWs.
I've had a fair few BMs and would be a potential buyer for one of these.
BUT
As usual these days the passenger seat is pathetically tiny....grounds for divorce if I brought one home

I sort of like it because its different, but I would hate to see what would happen to those chrome valve covers should she go over on her side.

I think I said I liked it way back at the beginning but if not I will now. I have always liked that horizontal twin look. I like odd looking bikes, that's why I ended up buying my 64 R50, I liked the Earls front end. I thought to myself at the time,"I think that's just ugly enough that I want it.". There is a whole story of how I found that bike sitting out in the weeds with 7,000 miles on it.

OK, you asked! I was out driving my tow truck years ago and had recently gotten my 54 T110 and I needed a headlight. As I was driving up the road I saw just the top of this headlight sticking up above the weeds and I thought "HOLY CRUD!! There is my headlight!!" So I whip the truck around and fly back to see if it was right and if it was for sale. I start walking over to it and as I get a little closer I get disappointed, I think " Aww, it's only and old BMW." I get a little closer and the seat has no vinyl left and the foam is shot. It has some home made saddle bag brackets on it that look terrible, the gas tank has no badges and is just laying on top of the bike. The front fender is also just laying on it. So at this point I am thinking this is junk. Oh it had sparkly red grips on it too. So for the heck of it I walked up and pushed the kick starter and the engine spun smooth as could be and then I took notice of that Earls front end and I thought"That's just ugly enough I think I want it!". So I found the kid who owned it and he said it was his dad's and he left it to him but he didn't want it anymore because he had a new HD. Ironicly his father had traded a Panhead for it back in the day. So I asked him how much and he thought about it and said "How about $500?" I told him I would give him $300 due to condition. He declined and I left wanting that bike. For the next 2 weeks I had the phone in my hand about 100 times to call him and just give him the $500. So finally the phone rang and it was him, he said "Give me $400 and it's yours." I couldn't get there fast enough! When I got there it turned out he had a new seat, the tank badges and everything that was missing except the front fender strut in a box he gave me with it!! So I get it home and clean the carbs, points, and put fresh oil in it. Then I fueled it up and fired it up and it ran sweet as can be. So I took the bag brackets off, put it back together and I have been riding it ever since. It is registered to this day, about 30 years later and it still runs and even has those original points in it! All I have done is change the oil and put tires on it. I think it does need new carbs now about 30 years later and every rubber part leaks because they are hard as a rock. Always been a great dependable bike, I have had it in other states and western PA a few times with never a hick up. It is slow and under powered so I only ride it when I am out alone. When I say slow I can hold 85 mph on the highway as long as it isn't up hill all day and it is smooth as silk but it takes a bit to get the rubber band wound up. It only makes 26 HP at 5600 RPM. I love it though, it's a fun dependable bike to put around the mountain on.
