Can anyone tell me for sure when or if the starter pin boss defect has been corrected or beefed up since 2005? I have just about decided on getting a newer America, and that's the only problem I have with the bike.....Looking for a 2010 or 2012. Nobody knows anything at my dealer here in Atlanta.

I agree....the box thing where the breather pipe exits the crankcase means it's the updated one.
For me, my next TBA will be an early updated breather model.
I went for a late model last time and though it was in many ways great I got scared off by all those sensors and stuff...plus on my TBA LT it had a speed sensor which cut the engine at 97 mph with absolutely no way to bypass this( believe me, I tried)
My friends carb speedy would simply romp away from me at high speed

If you go for 07 up you should be safe...there are some earlier ones from 05 but you do need to look at the breather arrangement to be sure you've got an updated one

There's a pic that PieMan posted in General Tech on 2/24/16 that I think will show the differences. I tried to link, but pics didn't follow.

IIRC, one of the threads gave the actual serial number when the change was made, but I couldn't locate that. I believe it was on the '06 790s. My 11/05 build date 790 has the newer design. Not sure about the 865s.

I have one of the early ones. If you have any reason to remove the left engine case you can install the Triumph Twin Power safe start in short order. I put one on several years ago.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

just to further muddy the waters:
I have a 05 speedmaster that was a 865 motor, the bike came off the line in November of 2004. It had the newer design breather. It is one of the entirely black case motors.

last fall, I did put on the TTP kit as I was doing the clutch anyway. But close to 40K miles and it had not broken yet.

05 speedmaster - 1100cc, 11:1 racing pistons, Carillo rods, thunderbike cams, ported and polished head, 2mm over intake and exhaust valves, Barnett kevlar clutch, scepter pipes, oversize manifolds, 45mm HSR's, TTP stage 4 firestarter

Yep...that squares with my own experiences....seems it wasn't a clean clear cut off...they just used what they had in stock

I was talking to Triumph Performance Parts in Australia about this and The owner Gary said he'd never had an 865cc motor having the problem some 790ccs do.

Never seen an 865 without the updated breather box.
