I like my 04 SM, never seemed too small or under powered to me. The old tank, carbs, and air cooled too!

I can't see the final version of this bike having twin shocks, it would not be on the road in this form under test if that's the case. The bobber chassis is already developed for the cruiser market as far as Triumph is concerned.

I thought the mono shock performed better than twin shocks. Maybe that's just w sport and naked sport bikes Of course w cruisers it's all about looks too. I like the look on the Harley softail deluxe. Did I just say I liked a Harley? I must be slipping.

You may very well be right, but the info came from someone within Triumph.
To date he has never misled us.
Same "deep-throat" guy that gave us the correct info on the T-Bird a year and a half before the bike was actually launched (if you remember).
Let's see.

I can only hope it looks more like an America/Speedmaster than a Bobber but as you say let's see.

I'm hoping they'll do as they did in making the current TBA...I.e. take the standard bonnie ...stretch the frame a bit and put some rake on the front end....be nice to see the old style TBA tank make a comeback too.

Yes, I loved the pre-2008 tank too.

Has anyone heard any updates of the new 1200 engine in a cruiser? I think the original article I read on this said likely 2018 release, which makes me think release in late 2017.

a single shock is a better design, of course depending on the shock. my 13 hammer which the speedmaster "might" replace because i want a lighter cruiser with decent power. that said the hammers single shock + inverted cartridge setup with only a single disc, with bigger 4 piston caliper is the best stock bike i ever owned in spite of its weight + size handling is great + 106 cu in got plenty of power. a 1200cc hi torque engine should be plenty with less weight + should put off less heat than the 106!!

I recently spoke to someone (deep throat) in Triumph who has given us very reliable info in the past who tells me the new 1200 cruiser will be featured in exhibitions as of September and on sale in showrooms next May.
Also that the Thunderbird will be dicontinued.
I personally trust this info.

Mine reckons we'll get the 900 rather than a 1200 engine...but agrees with yours about the timing of the launch

Motor Company s market share? web page

Interesting article...and Ive noticed in UK some of the themes highlighted here.
Eg. Millennial generations lack of interest in motorcycling.
We seem to have raised a risk averse generation.
I recall my own sense of disappointment when ,offering my then 17 yr old stepson help to buy a bike, I was met with ' I don't want one.... they're too dangerous!'.
Added to that the Byzantine complexity of passing the UK bike test, it's not surprising there's a decline in interest.
By now bikes should be cheap and fuel efficient....running a car is just as cheap here if not cheaper.
I suppose I should be grateful it's an old folks pastime...it's hard enough to find a decent machine that doesn't look like it's been designed by someone with absolutely no sympathy for grace and form.
Bah!
I needed that...where's my medication?

Mine isn't a dealer ... he/she is from inside and has proved pretty accurate for a decade.
We'll see in a few weeks, anyway.
Time flies.

P.S. I am hoping the new Speedy has the sexy curvy lines of the originals (tank etc.)

Discontinuing the Thunderbird would be a huge mistake. The only thing the Thunderbird needs is to be restyled. It already has the right displacement/torque and a good handling chassis so the expensive part is done. Come on Triumph just expand the Thunderbird line and make a moderate investment in these bikes that have remained on the market virtually unchanged since they were introduced in 2009. Can't see the over the top Rocket having more potential than the Thunderbird.

But the Thunderbird was restyled with the Commander and LT lines. The frame was stretched and the engine displacement increased. They simply don't seem to sell even though they look great and ride well. There are a lot on the market for dirt cheap, even in Canada. I hope Triumph keeps a bike in the 1600/1700 range to compete with the rest of the gang.

One dealer I spoke to stated that Triumph is placing more focus on developing new bikes with better fit and finish so they can increase the price. They want the public to EXPECT to pay more. Isn't that the way many BMW owners feel. You pay for quality.

Oh, I love the fact that the Rocket is over the top....that's why I bought one. Looking forward to the new model which the grapevine states should be out in 2019.

Triumph did not listen to the American consumer, their target base for the Thunderbird's.
They redesigned the bike in 2014 with the LT and Commander line. However the bike's were de-tuned creating less horse power and torque than the standard 1700 and the Storm.

The Thunderbird riders were begging for full blown tourer with fairing and hard locking saddlebags. At a minimum they wanted something along the lines of the Roadking or Springfield.
Instead Triumph rolled out the LT with the soft bags that collapsed and looked like crap in a few months.
Add to that the engine clacking noise that is prevalent in the LT and Commander design, no marketing as usual and it was doomed to failure.
The LT and Commander had a lot of potential, one of the most comfortable bikes you'll ever ride. Great handling as well.

Let's recall in 2010 and 2011 the Thunderbird was named bike of the year. Seven years later it was discontinued.
If we were playing darts and Triumph was throwing they would catch just the edge of the board.

Agreed.
At the time the T Bird came out I had high hopes to move up to one. I was completely underwhelmed by the Thunderbird, despite the great reviews. I saw very few on the road since its release. Triumph came so close, but no cigar. Sad.

Attempting to train potential buyers to expect to pay more is a road to failure, look at what that model has done to Harley Davidson. And that is what pisses me off the most, Triumph has a blueprint of what not to do and they are doing it anyway. I bought my 03 Speedmaster because it was priced like a Sportster but was as large and rode as well as all of my buddy's big twins. The sad part is Triumph bikes are approaching HD prices but do not hold anywhere near their resale value.

I feel very fortunate.

I love my 2005 America and she has plenty of life left in her.

Ema and I went to Windy City Triumph last year to look at the T-Bird LT and as Mike said I just could not pull the trigger on those soft bags.

Then Ema said honey I like the red one and of course I said sure. We bought the 2015 R3T for the same price the T-Bird was listed at. The R3T is a mixed bag and it makes me appreciate the America that much more, but with Triumph discontinuing the T Bird and the remodel coming on the Rocket I am very happy with my current inventory.

I like the new Speedmaster and think it is filling a big void in the market place.

My personal though is Triumph is going to leave the large cruiser market to HD and Indian. The new Rocket is going to be in the superbike class.

But what do I know on this cold December night here in Indiana.

One last thought....Merry Christmas everyone. Everyone of you have enriched my life and I thank you.

It could have been so much better.
It wasn't.

I don’t think so. You can find good deals on new 2015 or ‘16 birds even better deals on used ones. Of course I am prejudiced. I’ve owned 2 w no problems.

On a side note keeping with the title of this thread they have finally put a price on the new 2018 Speedmaster on the Triumph website. $13,150. It is a little higher than I would have guessed. About $1100 more than a T120.

In the meantime my local dealer is selling a 2017 Trophy SE for $14,500. Hmmm

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
