The other day I was riding in town, had good distance with the truck in front of me. He slammed on the brakes, I did the same. Rear tire slid to the right. I was riding in the middle of the lane, full of oil and gunk. I went down. Now I have a big bruise right side about the size of a cantolope. Moral of the story don't ride in the middle of a lane on secondary, highly traveled road.

Sad thing is with the condition of many of the roads the middle is the smoothest ride.

Slab riding seems ok in the middle of the lane, one thing I hate is when riding in the left part of the lane and it is a rut with lots of bumps.

Never ride in the middle of the lane. Not only does oil/grease/etc. build up thicker there, but lots of other debris (metal, glass, etc) manage to collect there.

Glad it worked out OK for you, meaning it could have been worse. Not so sure how rookie it was. Push that pedal hard enough and back end is gonna swing out no matter where on the lane you are.
Another ABS advertisement. Cruisers should be equipped with them as a standard feature.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

I did a similar thing when I first bought this bike.I was following a car into a roundabout .I darted a look to see if there was anything coming my way.Looked back and the car in had stopped. I grabbed the anchors and high sided off the bike.I just managed to miss the back end of the stopped car.The lady looked in her rear mirror, and drove off at speed leaving me in the road.Luckily it only happened at maybe 10 mph.Busted my full face helmet visor and put a small scratch on one muffler and a small scratch on the end of the hand grip.Lucky

Funny thing. I have ALWAYS been taught to never ride in the center of a lane. And I remember, years ago, it used to be on the motorcycle safety test you took to get your cycle license. But when my daughter and I read the current test for her to take her written exam, the book says that "riding in the center lane is ok depending on how important your placement in traffic is", or words to that effect. I couldn't dissagree more, but there it is, after years and years of common sense riding advice, and for the reason you just related, the State of Iowa is now telling new riders it is ok.

My DMV said that modern cars don't leak oil like older cars did. Hence, the change in lane riding position.

OK, I get that. But I've seen plenty of "modern" cars that had problems and leaked various fluids. And the laws of physics demand that any loose substance, gravel, sand, spilled milkshake, you name it, will get "kicked" to the center, either of both lanes or the center of single lanes. If there's some trash or flotsam, it's gonna find its way to the center! No SERIOUS rider is ever gonna not know that, I don't care HOW GENIUS the State guys are!

I ride in the center of the lane on occasion... You have to pay attention though. Jon, you might have thought you had plenty of room between yourself and the truck in front of you, obviously you did not. Mistakes happen, learn from it
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

Much of the newer stuff that I have read on lane positioning say that you have three zones within the lane (left, center and right) and each are OK provided the condition of that part of the lane is safe. I still stay out of the middle most of the time.

I almost plowed into the side of an ambulance the other day.We were travelling in oppsite directions,he pulled right infront of me.Locked up the brakes and swerved side to side.Guess I should have pulled over and stopped like I'm soposto. So many lights flashing I guess I was not paying attention to his blinkers.....Leson learned.
