Stumbled upon a used tank from a Legend, got it very, very cheap and tried it on as you can see in the pics below.

Need some input whether it's a good idea to take this to the next level, meaning adapting the thing to fit and then of course giving the tank the correct (for me) paint. It sits a bit higher up than the America tank, it's higher itself but holds less fuel due to the enormous tunnel underneath.

Anyway, as I said, need some input here. Yes or no?

Why not! If you don't have to put much money into it there isn't much to lose. Once its adapted to fit the work is done. If you don't like it I would bet somebody else would pay good money for it. Do it!

I was going that way - but rejected the idea after puting on the bike (just like you did).

To me it almost looked like the original tank without the dashboard - not to much improvement to to the work.

Since then the tank is waiting to go back to fleabay...

If you like the look - do it!

I totally agree. Doesn't sound like you have anything to lose. I think it looks great and was considering the same thing myself.

Why? Good question. Primary reason is that I'm having some trouble with my present tank - paint bubbling due to pinholes in the weldings (probably). Second reason is just because I can and that we have these long winters in Sweden. And it also could be more in line with my retro ambitions.

Go for it!! Seems to flow with the bikes shape nicely. Like everyone is sayn'. If after all is said and done and you don't like it, sell it. Innovation has to start somewhere.

I like your origional tank much better. I cut out the area under my dash, welded in a smooth panel and moved my fuel bung over to the side. I had similar issues with my welds allowing bubbling under the paint over time. I finally stripped my tank back down to bare welds and sent it to a radiator shop that does tanks. They did a fantastic job sealing the tank after welding the areas that were porus and pressure testing it. It has been perfect for 2+ years. I hate to admit defeat but I was sick of playing with it and I made a fantastic contact,(they've done several taqnks for the customs I build since.

Hey Piper, are you going to be able to open the tunnel a bit so the bottom of the tank is level with the valve covers?

I still have your old tank Jim, and they did a fantastic job on that one it's on my '02 America. I ended up cutting off the raised threaded bung you had on it and welding in a recessed "pop-up" bung and cap. Amazingly that weld is leak free, (patting my own back), probably because I didn't have to grind it down smoothe, The weld is burried under the cap flange so I ran a nice bead and left it. Love that tank.

The one I did now graces my '03 Speedmaster and I did the bulk of the work, (the radiator just fixed my screwups ande sealed it. They charged me $100 which was a steal but they are friends and always treat me well.

While waiting for winter (not really), I got myself new bags that IMHO goes well with the lines and theme:

Still haven't decided which way to go re. the tank...
