My 2003 BA has been running fine, until this morning. I took it out of the garage, turned the key, pulled out the choke, flipped the rocker switch down (turned it on), saw the lights on the tank were illuminated (including neutral), and hit the start button. It turned a couple times and then stopped. I hit the button again. *click* (Just once.) I hit it again. Same result. Turned everything to off and then back on, same result. Then I noticed I no longer had any lights illuminating on the tank.
Haven't touched it since then because I had to get to class, but I'm getting ready to head home and I'm hoping you all can give me some ideas on where to start looking/troubleshooting, based on the progression of events, when I do get home.

How's the charge and the connection on the battery? Mine acted similar with a bad connection at the terminal and then again kinda the same when it was about to crap out.

Charge seemed ok when I first tried to start it up. Seems odd how I had lights and now nothing at all. I wouldn't expect the battery to lose charge almost instantly, but I would expect a fuse to go out that way... which didn't happen.
Could it be a relay?

My bike just ran from Portland to Tri-Cities. Stopped for gas and then nothing. Dead Battery. The bike will not run if the battery gets low.

Hmmmm... my bike was suffering from a crappy battery recently (just before I went to a lithium) yet I was able to get it running with a push start.
Live to love, love to live.

Weird. I connected the charger to my battery and it didn't take long before it showed that it was charged. Still no lights. Then a few minutes later I went to grab my key and I noticed the lights were on. I hit the start button and it clicked, followed by the lights going out again.

A battery can get to full voltage but still not have the cranking power to turn it over or hold the charge.
Have you ever swapped the battery since 03? If you want it I have Karens OEM battery in the garage. It was working fine when I pulled it but it has been sitting for a few months.

It'd be worth a shot. I don't know if the battery has ever been changed.

I just got home and tested the voltage on the battery... its down to just under 7volts. I put it on the battery tender and will check it again in a few hours to see if its building a charge.
It may be a risk but your still welcome to it. Ill PM you my cell in case you still want it.

Sounds like a crook battery to me. Enough surface charge to power idiot lights but not enough to engage soleniod.

Mine crapped out today, eight years old.Had a not so great conection on ground, all I got was tic tic tic. had 11.9 volts tightened it up put it on charge and away it went.Rode home and the volt tester said 12.48,seemed strong to me.Gona keep it around a while, bought a new one today.Gona let it sit a bit and keep testing to see if it will hold it.

Nothing wears out a starter faster than letting it drag with insufficient juice. Or so I was told, I may go Keith's route after I hear some future positive feedback. Those upgraded charging systems for sale (Rick's?) are intriguing as well.

You know you can start the bike by jumping it from your non running car. If it starts then it was the battery. 12 volts is always 12 volts as long as the car is not running. Then you may hurt the lighter circuits.
I could stand corrected. Have been doing it for 4 decades now.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.
