No, not the wife's reaction to me stripping off.

I've have heard this ugly metal on metal screech from the engine about three times now (but not every time) when I pull away on a semi-cold engine (warmed up for a couple of minutes). The loud screech lasts about half a second when I engage the clutch under load and then stops abruptly.

I attribute this to the wet clutch not having oil between a couple of the plates momentarily. Should I be concerned? Should I just excercise the clutch a couple of times first while still in neutral?

Cheers, Richard

It does sound as if the noise does indeed come from the clutch. It couldn't hurt to engage and dis-engage the mechanism (engine turning) in neutral a couple of times, before your initial roll out. Been my experience that noises such as you described are indicative of wear taking place or worse. You should schedule a inspection when you have time. Don't forget to have a new gasket on hand, Triumph installs the gaskets dry, with 3 or 4 spots of adhesive on the inboard side, just enough glue, that the sucker won't likely survive a teardown and re-use.

Are you sure it's the engine and not the front brake binding?

Hmmm. I hadn't thought of that. Front pads are good, and it occurred most recently when I powered forward from stopped after I had rolled backwards out of a park. I hadn't detected any resistance when freewheeling backwards. Any way to tell?

I would drive around for a short bit and come in the drive way heavy on the front brake, park and get off, jack it up and check for rolling resistance. If its not that, try to get a cellphone video

You could just drive around a little and use your back brake exclusively, pull over, dismount and check if your rotor is hot? If it's draggin' it's going to be hot.

I know how to do that test. When I first put the 3-pot Nissin caliper on with sintered pads I took a test run, doing some bedding in braking. Got home and thought "I wonder how hot the rotor is?" It only takes a fraction of a second to get a badly burnt finger. And then just last week, I wondered how hot the header pipe was. That was much hotter.

My bike has done this from day one. It is not consistent, but typically happens on a cool/cold morning the first time I pull out onto the road. It only happens that first time, never again on the same ride. Never happens when bike is warmed up. Always assumed it was the clutch slipping. Sounds like a beagle getting kicked in the ribs.

Sorry but that's funny right there.

Any possibility wheel bearings are seizing momentarly? Just thinking out loud.

Beagle kicked the ribs is damn funny as well

Dunno. "Does the test for that involve heat and fingers?", he asked warily.

All I can think of is to take out the pads and give the pots a real good clean and make sure they're not binding, especially if its intermitant. It wont hurt to do it and its a lot cheaper than stripping the engine needlessly

Hey! I've always wondered how hot the head light bulb gets? Could you check it for me?

Well one thing that concens me about all this finger-heat checking is we need a standard for this type of measurment. So first I suggest you place your hand in water that has just begun to boil (212°f /100°c) for at least 3 minutes. Next you'll need to document the level of redness as compared to Triumph colors/colours ie Mullberry red, Cardinal red, Tornado red, ect.. (A picture of your hand next to these would be great, thank you) After this has been acomplished well need to you document the length of recovery back to normal skin tone, pictures as well. Now at this piont you'll need to eat some extreamly hot peppers,(a scoville index of at least 1,000,000 such as the Bhut Jolokia) here again we'll need to see the redness of you face along with the same Triumph colors/colours.
Now all this has been finisheed go have a few brews and cool off.

mine just started doing the same thing and my buddies thruxton does it as well. i'm pretty sure it's the clutch. what oil do you use? i'm using 20-50 now and it started happening. my buddy swears his got worse when he went from 10-40 to 20-50. i also have a mechanic friend who says he come across it before, he takes the clutch all apart, everything looks fine, carefully puts it back together using the triumph aligning tool and it goes away. i'll be going back to 10-40 on my next change to see if it goes away. i'm in los angeles so it's mostly in the high 70s to low 90's.

also you can test to make sure it's the clutch by really getting on it and popping the clutch. that's when it should make the noise. mine also sometimes does it on a hard downshift.

Now you're just being silly! I'm not stupid. Everyone knows that you don't touch bulbs with your fingers because the skin acids/oils shorten the life of the bulb.

More testing for the weekend. I'll get the first aid kit ready. The latest suggestion of "getting on it and dropping the clutch" will probably require an ambulance on standby.

How many miles on your bike? Might just be a light glazing on the friction discs slipping against the steel drive plates until they warm up.

25000km (15600 miles). It is only momentary and only about once every 20 starts. Does the glazing wear off?

Hi Benny. That's worth checking. I have been 'slack' with my chain maintenance and I think it could be too loose, near the end of its life.

The first time I grabbed a hot muffler was at age 9. My brother had just finished riding out go-kart and told me the muffler was loose and needed to be fixed. I immediately grabbed the muffler to verify that it was indeed loose. Blistered all 5 finger tips within seconds...

The second time I purposely touched a muffler/header pipe was 2 months ago after Id just picked up my 77 Bonnie...Hurt like hell for about 3 minutes. No blisters, just shiny skin, then back to normal. I thought it was really odd and wanted to touch other hot surface to see if my fingers would blister or how badly it would hurt. I haven't followed up on that yet.

Hi Brin. It was a loose chain. Benny (Islandbum) guessed it. Chain was near the end of its life and kept loosening.
