I had to replace the wiring harness on my 02 America because of a short. Didn’t realize that when I put the bike on the motorcycle jack to do the work, that it caught and bent about a ¼ of an inch on the top of oil filter. Needless to say when it bent small amount at the top of the filter it made a small crack in it. Was riding yesterday and noticed that my rear brakes weren’t working. Stopped with the front breaks and after checking the bike over realized that oil from the small crack in the filter had sprayed out over the back of the bike and I had oil on my pads and brake rotor. The bike is fixed and the oil filter replaced. Just a warning to make sure if you use a motorcycle jack on your bike to watch out for the oil filter…

Good advice.
Or just don't use a lift for an oil change. I don't.

He used the lift for the wiring job, cracked the filter as a byproduct. I bent mine the same way the 2nd time I used it when I was working on the carbs.

Nah. I don't use the lift for oil changes only when I'm doing work on the bike. Since the bike is lowered, when I raise it up to work on it's a little easier on the back...

Don't know if the new America's and Bonnies have the same oil filter set up but that is the only part I've come across on the bike that the design sucks. The filter sticks out a little too far out of the bottom of the engine and leaves the filter vulnerable to damage. On one of the Philly Cheeseteak rides my buddy (Jethro666), who also has an America, had a rock from the car in front of him hit the side of his oil filter. It punched a small hole in his filter. Luckily there was an auto parts store down the street from the sub place and we were able to throw the new filter on in the parking lot.

I built a steel plate to cover mine. It straps to the frame tubes. It seemed like the safe thing to do considering how low the filter sits.

F.Y.I.: If you ever have a problem with your filter, you can remove it without losing much oil. You will lose whatever is within the filter and just a little bit down the side as you pull off the filter. Don’t worry about having all your oil rush out.

Wow, that's good to know. I never would have thought you wouldn't loose all of the motors oil.

You have to change oil in these things? OH! SH-T!

Well, you don't HAVE to. But, FYI, my genuine Triumph shop manual DOES say not to use cooking oil. Dangitt!

I too have accidently picked the bike up by the oil filter, nicely crushing it. To permanently fix the problem I have ginned up some plans to make a remote oil filter plate that will mount to those 2 tabs on the frame just back of the engine. That puts the filter out of the way and horizontal (thereby easier to drain). I intend to work on this over the winter and will post the how info (assuming it works of course)

I'm more of a whiskey thinker, last time I had gin I passed out in the middle of the floor at at buddies house, woke up not knowing where I was, however I was using the gin as a chaser for some really good shine.
