bike week after last run Ignition off - 12.8v Ignition on,light on - not running - 12.3v bike engine running 1000rpm - 14.7  v I'm very happy with this readings

wires has resistance, you lose voltage due to the resistance...so bigger wire less resistance more voltage at the end of the wire

10 or 12 gauge will do just fine. I deem this mod necessary, not really optional. To do it will eliminate a lot of potential grief to be sure. That, and it's not so difficult. From our archives From Triumph RAT

Mine is an 04. Anyone know what color wire I should be tapping in too? Black with red stripe?

Wire colors coming out of RR
Black/red is positive
Black/white is negative (ground or earth...however you want to refer to it)
Black (x3) are to the alternator

OK, that mod seems great to me, but would it be prudent to get one of those aftermarket regulators or just mod the stock one? I don't have heated accessories, just some lights and an outlet for my hair drier. And secondly, if the aftermarket regulator is a thumbs up, a link to a supplier would be wonderful. Thank you.

And to elaborate on why one would want to do this, the stock unit has a high failure rate. If you're lucky you won't find out at 3am when you're 35 miles east of bakersfield. With enough juice on your phone to have the insurance company yell you that the roadside assistance you had last year is magically no longer applied to your account.

so the only thing you did was tap into the black/red wire with a fused line and straight to the positive? no negative adjustments or changes? Not an electrician either! but makes allot of sense to me. My bike always runs the best first thing of the year after sitting all year with the battery tender on it, than after a while not so much.

I just did it. Easy less than an hour to do. I tapped into the red/black using this http://www.posi-lock.com/posiplug.html and then directly to the positive post on the battery. The hardest part was getting enough wire to tap into. I gained between 1/2 and 1 volts depending on revs.

thats different, it will hold 10 guage etc? did you also put a fuse in-line?

I did put a fuse in line. The positap largest gauge is a 10/12.It worked great,there is not much wire to work with,that's the only issue.Certainly easier than solder and this way you have two wires going back to the battery,the original and the secondary addition.

I'm not a fan of connection like that. They are quick and easy but when dealing with the need to tap into or splice a copper stranded wire and in an environment where shaking and weather comes into play soldering will always be my first choice.
You gotta do what you gotta do but I've seen those types of connections cut through enough wire that they allow the wire to break and worse...corrode over time causing the wire to fail by not passing voltage.

Wowzah ! You gotta do this thing. I took Grzegorz's advice and straight lined the regulator to the battery and got nearly TWO volts. Lola's been having charging issues for a while, putting out 12.1 volts at all RPM's. I 'spose the factory reg. is crapped out. Before: 12.1 After: 13.9 / 14.1 above 1K It's just a bit tricky , I used an existing 12G pigtail with a 25A fuse that came with a trickle charger. Disconnect battery, unbolt the regulator, skin the black/red and solder. Wrap it well, 'cause it will rub on aluminum and hot just loves a nice ground. There's NO WAY to get the plug end free from the gap between the engine and frame, so you'll hafta work underneath. Would be SO easy to do on a bench. That said, it took an hour or less. Got me a cool white face old style volt gauge from Autometer (made in USA) and will mount it beside the speedo. Next step is a Rick's Regulator, and hope Ricky made a small enough plug to squeeze through that gap. This icon is my review :

Soon. Found a chrome sleeve for the gauge off of and old shower valve, fits like it was made for it and has a bullet sorta end. Gonna make a stainless bracket and mount it on the windshield support next to the speedo. Will be cool !

I finished this mod today. Here is my readings:
Key off -----before 12.3 after 12.4
Idle-----------------14.2........ 13.8
2000 rpm----------13.3........ 14.0
4000 rpm----------12.9........ 13.7
6000 rpm----------12.6........ 13.5
Does this seem right, cause I didn't think the voltage should drop as the rpm's went up.

Yes the voltage will drop approx half a volt at high revs. I assume you did the wiring mod and not the MOSFET R/R as well. In which case your results are as expected. The MOSFET should give about half a volt more results.
Your 'before' reading at idle doesn't seem right - 4.2v at idle is extremely high especially considering the other 'before' readings.

Thanks for the info. I checked each reading twice to be sure they were consistent and the before idle I checked several times cause I thought it strange also. I'm gonna run it the way it is for a little while but I may just invest in a new MOSFET R/R.

Me too, just got one from Rick at Roaster. Fantastic guy, if you decide to get an upgrade regulator, do binnis with this fellow , two thumbs up. Will post my voltage increases when I get all this stuff wired up. Got three more weeks of chair time so it's fix Lola stuff for a while.

OK, got the new Mosfet out today, and it appears from Jack's advice, totally isolate the new Mosfet from the stock harness plugs and basically start over . Take the 3 smalls from the stator and solder them into the 3 wire plug on the new R/R and then take the 2 #10's from the new R/R and go straight to the battery , fused of course . Leave the stock 5 wire harness plug dangling useless from the space behind the carbs. Does this seem right ? It looks like exactly what ole Jack is sayin' , but wanted to check here to see if anyone has gone beyond the battery wire mod and replaced the stock R/R . Is it correct to assume that the output from the stock R/R only has to go to the battery and not feed into the 5 wire harness ? Thank you

Correct - do not connect back into the old harness.
Postive wire from the RR direct to the battery (with inline heavy duty fuse) and the negative/earth/ground can go direct to the earth on the engine - which is located just in front of the RR - you'll see a black wire connecting to a small bolt on the back of the engine case. I would also run a #10 wire from the engine earth direct to the battery if you haven't already done that mod. This will improve the battery charging immensely.

Yeah, I almost got one from Ricks until I saw Jacks website, and yupp , plug and play is a heap easier, but I have charging/voltage issues, so I suppose mainlining the new R/R is the best choice for my situation.

OK , all hooked up and this is my official result in the professional chart below.
RPM ------- Stock R/R -------- Shendingen R/R
1,000 ------ 12.5 ------- 13.9
1,500 ------ 14.1 ------- 14.3
2,000 ------ 13.8 ------- 14.3
2,500 ------- 13.8 ------ 14.3
At idle I gained 1.4 volts and 0.5 volts across the RPM range.
The new R/R was too big to mount on the existing bracket, so I had to drill and tap 1/4" holes and mount under the big squarish frame box, it will act as a heat sink there. Abandoned the stock wiring, mainlined the + and - to the battery, followed the three yellow stator wires to a three prong plug and that snapped into the three wire plug from the new R/R.
I think it was worth the time and money, since I can't work yet, I had plenty of time to fiddle with my girl.

Good job and good results Wade. Where did you measure the voltage (where is your voltmeter connected)? If it connects to the stock loom (not directly to the battery) you can probably add a bit more to those figures.
I believe there is superconductor technology in your MOSFET RR.

My voltmeter gauge is mounted beside the speedo and its wired directly into my Denali Powerhub, which is a fused buss coming right off the battery.
Feels good to see the needle at 14.3 , not wondering if I'm going down the road discharging the battery like I was before.

The power hub is a great set up. Makes adding accessories easier and better organized electrically. I have a home made version that includes switches. Where did you mount the power hub?

I makes me a bracket for it and mounted the bracket on one of the bolts that holds the feder on, right in that space under the seat. So's, I lifs ups the seat and there is Denali. Very cool accessory.
Ouch, between that thing and the R/R and all the supporting stuff to go with it, I musta shelled out 3 or more bills.
