Been knocking around the idea of either cutting the end of my chain guard just about where the rear shock lines up through it and then drilling it like the covers over the filters or removing it all together, i use wax for chain so not a big issue with junk, either that or removing it all together and putting a nice black chain on the bike, What are the issues? Anyone have much issue with chains snapping these days? Post pics of your mods or removal if ya got em, thanks

The chain GUARD is in place for a reason, but as the saying goes, different strokes for different folks.

I've been riding with no chain guard for a while and the chain has not broke. Actually, I've never had a chain break, guard or not. Hey, wait a minute, why would a lack of a guard cause a chain to snap?

It wouldn't, but at 80 mph it might not be a pleasent thing without the guard, having said that i have read plenty of threads where the guard made things a bit worse, not to mention Triumphs history with broken guards falling off their bikes, i think i will keep most of it on, i am thinking just the back end of it a bit, or at the very least drilling it out some to make it look a little better then the plain jane OEM black one. Don't want more chrome.

As far as I could ever tell, the only advantage to having a chain guard is that it keeps chain cleaner and chain lube from sprayin' up towards certain parts of your bike after you've cleaned and lubed it. (...and so, in the case of a certain dude in NE PA, I'd say there's probably NO reason at all for THAT GUY to have one on HIS bike anyway...RIGHT IAN?!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I have the redesigned version after the stock one broke. It's much more stout than the original and I doubt it's going to break. That being said, stripped down bikes like the one above should be without guard.

ya i really like the no guard look, new chains are certainly 1000% better the day of old thats for sure. I think i will carry on with my cut and groove idea, will still be some left certainly enough to prevent a whip but smaller enough to show the rear sprocket which adds a nice touch.

No Marty just after the second bold near the axle, starting at the top then round about down till it gets to the bottom, sort of cut a line through the guard but follow the rear shock (back of it) it will expose allot of the rear sprocket but still leave guard in case of a whip during break, i rarely if ever ride with a passenger these days, no foot pegs anymore LOL

This may be a dumb question.... Does the top of the chain bounce around at all? I was contemplating cutting my chain guard so that it hugged the chain a little closer. I want to keep mine on. I just think it sits to high off the chain making it stick out.

Huh that's right my bike did have a chain guard... I think your idea could be cool and one of a kind. Drilled holes like some of the front sprocket covers have or a smoother line to clean up the look. Let us see what you've come up with after you're done.
