I've been watching the first season of Mad Men, set in 1960, and it reminds you that "gay" used to mean something very different.

Language evolves constantly. Sometimes it's a positive change, sometimes not.

The duality of meaning, denoted and the connoted, so divergent in evolution. Only in the English languge.

In a totally different context.

Let's have a sing along!

Actually it's not unique to English.

Spaniards, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Mexicans speak what is nominally the same language.
But it's quite different due to accents and idioms.

(...yeah, yeah, I know...a "superfluous-U 2" would have 2 Bonos, huh?!...beat ya to it, didn't I?!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I sleep with a Gay every night. Sheila Gay, my wife!

She's got so much Gay pride, she refuses to use the word gay when referring to homosexuals.
