knife? I never get on the bike without one. You never know when you may need one for a roadside repair. I have never been in a situation(altercation) where I said I wish I had a knife. So I don't carry for protection, but it does feel somewhat comforting to have one around. I only ask because I just got 2 new knives and I checked the NJ law and it turns out they are both illegal to carry.

on my bike I have a knife with all the gadgets.... I used to carry a small knife all the time until security became too much of a hassle

What are the laws in NJ? I'm honestly not real sure what the laws in Texas are, but as long as you mind your own business the cops never never have any reason to check your blade anyways...

Posting pics on this site is harder than flying the space shuttle. In NJ, no gravity operated knives, stilletos, daggers, switchblades etc. It basically reads like no fixed blade over 5" or overall length of 10." However isn't any fixed blade a dagger? Or is a dagger a double sided blade? yeah that's probably it.

I always carry one in either my saddlebags or my tool roll, usually a multipurpose type tool though.

Apparently the law in Texas state an illegal knife has a blade length of 5.5 inches or is a stilletto, sword, dirk etc.
According the article I read (it was on the internet, so it MUST be true) said the many states use poorly defined language in order to give police more room for interpretation when dealing with offenders.

Small knife in the pocket, always. Except when traveling through our wonderful airports of course, Gave a knife away once cuz i forgot i had it on me til i was having a smoke out front waiting for a flight.

You didn't specify for utility or security. I have a Leatherman in my saddlebags, a box cutter in my tool roll, a small credit card sized tool kit in my pocket with a small serrated knife. I own a 10" Cold Steel Master Tanto I've always to wear on my chap belt but I figured it would be more trouble than it's worth, ESPECIALLY when traveling to Canada.

Used to carry a fairly harmless Swiss Army around but it's not worth the risk nowadays. It's getting ridiculous over here what they can now consider to be an offensive weapon...

I carry a small Frontier 3 blade pocketknife for general utility, but keep my dad's 8 1/2" Randall Made (randallknives.com) in the RV. He carried it through France and Germany during WWII, so it's good enough for me. I keep a 4 1/2 blade with the bike.

How times change. Lots of places will get you arrested now, if you carry one. My grandfather never left home without his pocket knife. Neither do I, and I'll bet I use it at least every other day for something or other.

I carry a multi-tool in my tool pouch, and a pocket knife always on me. I really like the SOG flash II, assisted open, relatively inexpensive, American made, convenient to carry and fast to open. I don't carry it for protection, but when a guy tried to mug me it worked like a charm.

My knife carrying is a throw back to my grandfather too. When I lived on the farm with him we always carried one for general use. I have a 10" double edged dagger on my wrecker dash and I carry a Buck lock blade. My grandfather also always had his 45 on his hip. I carry too but not a 45 like he had.

I always seem to have a folding knife in my pocket. They generally last 3 - 7 years before being "misplaced". Last week I was cutting old plastic tags out of steers ears, but I mostly use it for more exotic and dangerous stuff like daily opening the daily junk mail. The one I have now has "Bear" stamped on the blade, it seems like a good one  . jh

I generally always have my Victorinox SwissTool (very similar to a leatherman) on me. It actually has two blades, one double edge, and the other is serrated. The bottle opener gets used almost as much as either blade.

Funny how we "harken" back to the old days. I feell the same type of sentiment. My grandfather always wore a newsboy hat and I never leave the house without putting mine on.

Based on the actual law, code, whatever you want to call it. Do a google search "NJ knife law" it's right there. I had a kid working for me who told a cop that he got beat up so he carries a pipe with in his car. "Your under arrest sonny." So are you saying I can carry a machete as long as I tell the cop I'm bushwacking?

Love my little Kershaw Chive, about $30 at Walmart (assisted opening):  Picked this up last week, an assited opening, out-the-front knife (legal in MD):  http://www.bladeplay.com/item--Smith-Wesson-Assisted--5012I also have a neat, Buck lockblade with a tiny spot flashlight (pinpoint) build into the handle, points at the blade. always a pocket knife - they are handy for everything, a small utility knife in the tool pouch on the bike, and if I am riding a leatherman on my belt. The leatherman is a good tool and I once used it to get some 'camp meat' (the back loins) out of a freshly hit deer, while on a long ride.

I've carried a Leatherman for years as a matter of habit, since I fix stuff for a living. Even forgot I had it one time and wore it onto a plane from Nashville to Seattle ('99 - and the security guy even showed me a trick to keep it from setting off the metal detector). Lately I've been carrying one of these:  I can call it a tool cause it has a screwdriver  I remember as a kid I always carried a Buck folder that my dad gave me. Gave my boys, and my stepson, pocket knives to carry. Boys should have pocketknives, just as much as they should know how to rebuild a carb, how to start a fire, and never hit a girl. PS - carry a pistol too; a UPS40 or a .38+P hammerless depending on my mood and clothing choice.

I always carry a knife. Even when in court clothes. When riding I carry an Applegate/Fairbairn folding dagger and a concealedofficer's model Colt .45. or a Kimber Pro Carry .45. But then I I am able to do this legally. When I fly for work, I fly armed, so they dont worry about my knife. Once shortly after 9/11, I was flying armed to pick up a prisoner, but the new TSA rep had me give up my fingernail clippers because they were on the banned list at the time. I wasnt sure how the gun was going to do less damage than the clippers, but it wasnt worth the argument.

If I'm dressed, I'm carrying. Currently in my pocket is a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman. The law in Virginia doesn't have a maximum limit on blade length unless on school property, then it is 3". When I leave the house I also have some manner of handgun on me (and a permit). In those cases where I am not permitted to carry either, I have a walking stick a little training and a note from my Doctor saying I need it for an intermittent instability of the ankle.
