What are you guys using to remove the front wheel axle? I replaced my rear tire no problem, using normal metric wrenches. Tried to do the front tonight and find I need Large allen wrenches to remove the spindle nut and axle. Any ideas or shortcuts without buying special tools.
TIA
Steve

The right side is a 12mm allen and the left is a 19mm allen.

I bought a set of 5 larger socket mounted allen bits at Advance Auto parts which included the 12 but only went up to 17. They weren't that expensive....

For the 19mm side, you can use a Craftsman (maybe others?) 5/8" sparkplug socket. You put the six-sided end in and use an extension through it to drive it...

5/8 socket

You can use bolt heads that fit the openings. Just find a couple old bolts that the head fits in the axle and grab them with vise grips or get fancy and heat and bend the old bolts and make yourself a set of wrenches.

I used a pipe fitting that fitted.....and the other end had a hole for a smaller allen key...

Gina 03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel... 06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel... 09 America - It's very blue....

To keep the axle from spinning while you loosen/torque it.

19mm bolt with a couple nuts locked on the other end. Then use a socket on the nuts. A little more elegant than vice grips.

Thanks for the tip. An M10 metric bolt seems to fit the 19mm side well.

I repeat........"Why would you need the 19mm allen wrench?....the axle can be pushed out without turning it....." and it can be held with the 2 "pinch bolts" while either removing or torquing the 12mm side.....
