Just got the August MC today (August?) and they did a decent "first ride" write up on the '07 America. Some highlights: "It's all that dry wit, right? I mean, who else but a British motorcycle manufacturer would name a cruiser 'America' and choose not to power it with a V-twin?'" "Milwaukee may want you to believe the word 'heritage' bears a bar-and-shield trademark, but Triumph's historical quotient - in the form of its parallel-twin engine - is undeniable." "Overall the Triumph America provides an enjoyable cruising experience with historical cachet at a reasonable $7,999... for those who prefer to stand out from the 'heritage' herd." Ok, standouts, group hug...

Well, it's about time a journalist used the word "cachet" properly.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Right on. "in general terms cachet refers to "prestige", or a societal stamp of approval." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CachetMC's been pretty good to our bikes. Their '02 review of the BA was good. Tech Editor Mark Zimmerman (a Bonneville owner) said a couple seasons back that the America was, in his opinion, the perfect cruiser at the end of their 5,000 mile America test. roadie

That may have been the article that got me into the Triumph dealership. The rest, as they say, is history.

I don't know. It was kind of a white bread review. They didn't say anything great about the bike and nothing bad. It didn't seem he was overly impressed.

I'm no journalist, but I do use "cachet" correctly. Like, "If there's a fly ball within my reach, I'm gonna cachet."

It's actually striking to see a journalist use 'cachet' correctly... now if they would only learn that 'forte' (pronounced fortay) is a musical term and 'forte' (pronounced fort) is used to mean one's strong point... End of lecture

That's because none of the reviews I've ever read about these bikes ever really gush with superlatives. I think, in some way, few of motojournalist who bother to write about this machines don't really know what to make of it.
It's a cruiser, right?! But, as this particular reviewer noted...Then why isn't it a V-Twin in that case?(chalk it up to "british excentricity", as this reviewer did)
It's power output is somewhat low, right?! Well, not in comparison to many other twin-cylinder bikes with the same displacement. But when you test-ride sportbikes everyday for a living, 47 BHP[at the rear wheel] does seem more than a might low.
I've always kind of looked at my BA as the perfect motorcycling compromise. A cruiser, that is probably the best handling cruiser on the market today, with just enough power to be "enough" for most situations that I encounter daily.
And, because the word "compromise" seldomly elicits superlatives, this is what you get.
(myself...I can appreciate a very modern motorcycle that can do most things pretty well, and that still somewhat resembles one of the all time classics of all classics...the Triumph Bonneville)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I remember this very brit guy in Nelson BC last year during the Kootenay Raid - he looks over my bike and sez, "Ah bit mo lie a hah-ley than a triumph, eh?"
Not to beat it to death, but MC Editor Zimmerman proclaimed the America the perfect cruiser back in '06. Pretty gushy, I'd say.
But you're right, it is a pretty understated review. I think our scoots, to quote Dwight, "do most things pretty well and ...somewhat resembles one of the all time classics."
You know, a do-it-all ride. The mags rave about the narrowly focused mongo HP, ungodly size, unbelieveably fast, AMAzing sickles. The ones that live best on a track, in a fantasy, or a fork lift, get the hot press.
We get the good bike... And I'm glad MC said nice stuff about 'em.

Don't need to read the reviews of what I already know, but, it sure is nice to get some good press. Now, everyone will want one....
