Yes today i am indeed a lucky guy. Saturday early evening i received a callfrom my daughter that my son was being transported to the hospital. He was in a motorcycle accident. Not having all details my wife and i rushed to the hospital. Apparently he struck a car making an illegal u-turn in and out of a shopping center. My son t-bone her car and flew over the hood. He was only doing abut 15 mph. which who knows saved him. He has minor back leg and neck pain, which he says he can live with. His bike a Suzuki Blvd. looks totaled. He will not ride again. In taking my safety course for riding one thing was stressed over and over. Anticipate what is happening all around you. Be aware of your front rear and sides. Now in my sons case there was no time to react, and these accidents will continue to happen with careless drivers. I myself don't know how long i will continue to ride, for this accident will strengthen my awareness of all drivers around me. Please all be careful out there, and wear a helmit. You see my son was not wearing one. We all in deed are very lucky.

Glad your son is okay. People do thoughtless things all the time. If they are surrounded by steel, it's no big deal.
My brother rides bicycles and he has adopted my attitude that you must ride as if everyone is out to kill you. Even that won't protect you all the time.
I don't leave my driveway without a yellow helment and yellow and black balistic riding jacket but even that is no guarantee someone won't do something really stupid.
Hope your son heals quickly.

Glad to hear your son is alright Doug, we all need to be more aware, I think being aware comes with the territory of riding a bike for a few years and always expecting the worse to happen, even if it does not..

If there is such a thing, that is a good accident. Good, because it could have been sooooo bad. Glad he is okay.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Doug, Glad to hear your son's accident sounds like one in which he'll soon heal. "Young 'uns" are pretty good at that there healin' stuff, ya know.(not like us "older dudes")
And in this moment of concern for him, thanks for taking the time to remind us all that that "circle of danger" is all around us bikers as we motor down the road.

Best wishes and all.. just wonder why you say he won't ride again? If he was only doing 15mph then he obviously anticipated (correctly) someone doing something stupid. They did and he still got caught out, but got away with it with hopefully minor injuries (although check out that neck pain and get it properly scanned and at their expense). He sounds like a careful rider who got unlucky, but unless he really doesn't want to get back on, no reason to stop.. ?

I know somewhat how you feel, Doug, because the same thing happened to my grandson awhile back. However, I have been riding since '56 and would not even consider giving it up. Experience, common sense and protective equipment are the keys. Unfortunately, the young ones do not have the experience and choose not to use the protection. (as well as some of the RUBS and boomers riding from bar to bar with a rag on their heads} Best of luck to your son.

Sorry to hear that your son was hurt. I hope he recovers soon and completely. Thank God he was moving slowly when it happened. Best wishes to you and your family.

Dang Doug, that does suck. Good kid there and a shame he does not want to ride again but I respect his choice. Tell him I am thinking about him...

Doug: Glad your son is okay. I know how you feel, both of my sons ride. One is 40 and the other is almost 37, but we still worry about them. I read an article about the differences in American and German drivers. The Germans are better because their testing and requirements to get a license is much tougher. To be a driver there you really have to want to do it right. The eating, cell phones, and etc. are out. I think we need to make it tougher.
