It’s time for the first ride of the fall season to head out to the mountains. We are heading up to Skyline Drive (weather permitting) on Sunday, October 8th. I know the leaves haven’t started to turn yet, but it’s still really pretty up on the mountain anytime of the year. As we get closer I’ll post the meeting details.

Hey, keep me posted. I was going to go to the Hershey Fall meet on the 8th, but would rather do this ride with you guys. I'm coming from Hagerstown, hopefully we could meet somewhere in VA?

Cool. We usually head out around the beltway to Rt 66. Then take Rt 29 by Gainesville, VA to Rt 211 and head out on 211 up the mountain. I know on one of the rides to Skyline, we met up with Dale on Rt. 29 & Mark out on 211. I don't know where but somewhere in that path we can probably hook up with you.

It's going to happen unless the weather does not cooperate. When we have hooked up with people in Warrenton, we usually meet them at the Sheetz gas station as we take the business route into Warrenton. It's on the right side of the road. I think there's a light there but I don't remember. I know the Chevy dealership is next to it. We usually stop for gas there and we can meet you there.

Dale,
It's been a while since we've riden together. It's be good riding with you again. I do remember where we met on 29. Instead of there you might want to head into Warrenton and we can meet at the Sheetz gas station when we stop for gas. A little safer then the side of the road on Rt 29.

We will be meeting at Clinton Cycles at 8:00 that morning and will roll by 8:30, which should get us to Warrenton between 9:30 and 10:00.
For those who need directions to the Sheetz station; as we take the business route into Warrenton from Rt 29, the Sheetz gas station is on the right. I believe there is a stoplight on the same corner. If I remember correctly, the Chevy dealership (Country Chevrolet) is also at the same intersection. The stoplight is the first light you come to when you take the business route.

Jeff,
When we roll out of Clinton, we run the south side of the Washington beltway around to Rt 66 in Virginia and head west. I don’t know if there’s a more direct route that you can take from your area to meet us in Virginia. You want to try to head to Warrenton and meet up with us there? I know Dale and Al are coming down from northern Maryland and hooking up with us there. There's also a rest stop on Rt. 66 just before Manassas. Let me know. Hope you can make it.

Once we get to Skyline, we are headed south which takes us over the highest point on the "drive"....

Well I just checked out the long range forecast and it’s looking good for our ride. Mid 70’s and clear. I also checked the weather forecast for the mountains and it’s the same. Just a reminder for those that are riding next Sunday, what ever the temps are here, it’s usually about 10-15 degrees cooler up on the mountain so dress accordingly.

Fred, I can vouch for that! You can freeze you butt off on the Skyline if you don't dress for it.

Jeff,
I can tell by your post that you’re not feeling good. I think you should take it easy and not work Sunday. Some nice mountain air does wonders……

*****MEETING DETAILS***** We will meet up at Clinton Cycles Sunday, October 8th at 8:00 AM. We are rolling by 8:30. If you miss us at Clinto, head for Warrenton. For those who are hooking up with us in Warrenton, we should arrive at the Sheetz gas station between 9:30 and 10:00. Please make sure you top off your tank before you get to Clinton or when you arrive at the Sheetz station. I’ve posted the directions to the Sheetz earlier in this thread. Also better to bring to many warm clothes and not need them then not enough and freeze your butt off on the mountain. The weather is still looking really nice for the ride, mid 70’s and sunny. From the responses I’ve gotten in, looks like we will probably have about 10 or 12 riders this time. See you all Sunday…..

Don't forget to stop at the entrance out of sight of the rangers and see if you can get some passes from riders exiting the Skyline Drive. They are good for one week and should be recycled as our rides pollute way less than two-thirds the amount cages do. 15 bucks for a cage and $10 for a motorsickle. I would not recommend eating at the Skyline Diner right off the North entrance to the skyline drive. Watch out for deers and turkeys. Those suckers will greet you on the road.

Just saw the forecast this morning for Sunday. Looks like somebody is watching out for us. Sunday is looking like the best day weatherwise for this weekend. They are still calling for a partly cloudy day low 70’s and NO RAIN here or in the mountains…..

THE RIDE IS ON!!! Just heard the weather report and all this cloudy, drizzly crap will be outta here by this afternoon. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high around 70, which means it’ll be in the 60’s for most of the day so dress warm for the mountains.
See ya in the AM…..

Well it turned out to be an interesting day. It had good points and some bad. Although we had a couple of no shows and some cancellations, we still ended up with 12 riders today. It was nice to meet a couple of members I hadn’t met or ridden with before, Don (Lylesdo) & Joe (Toofless). Hope to ride again with you two. As we rode up the mountain on Rt 211, we ran across the top and down the other side to a nice country type restaurant (Brookside Restaurant) where we usually stop and get a bite to eat before our trek on Skyline. After we ate and headed back up the mountain to jump on Skyline Drive, 9 of us made it and we were missing 3. Turned out they got separated from the group and missed the turn onto Skyline Drive and for whatever reason headed back down the mountain. We waited for them and even sent Kevin down the mountain on his crotch rocket to see if he could catch them. He didn’t. I talked with the 3 MIA’s this evening and all made it back safely. Anyway, the ride was cut short, but I still enjoyed meeting the new faces and the lunch on the mountain.

I agree Gene, it was awesome meeting all of you guys! We have got to do a make up ride soon. To add more humor to the trip... the 5 of us that went up to Skyland to wait ended up splitting up after waiting for about an hour. Ozz went back your way (I assume you saw him again). Army and Toofless left and headed on down to 33 (Will and I waited for a while longer). We split about 30 minutes later and headed down to 33 as well. Anyway, Will and I are sitting at a stop light on 33 and Army and Toofless pull up right behind us! They took the wrong turn on 33 and headed towards Harrisonburg instead of Gordonsville. Anyway, the four of us rode together back towards Warrenton. All in all, a great day for a ride! Will and I look forward to another one soon.

Cool. I’m glad you made it. When we finally made contact with Big Steve he ended up at the gas station in Warrenton where we originally met. Kevin’s friend Frank ended up heading back to Leesburg. Mehai lost everyone and just headed home. Kevin and his friend headed back down the mountain to meet Frank in Warrenton. Kasey went down to hook up with Big Steve to keep in from getting lost but Big Steve got lost anyway and ended up in Fredericksburg. He got home ok. I headed back up Skyland but everyone had left by that time. I did pass Dale coming down the mountain on my way to Skyland. I waited up there for Kasey who finally joined me. It was kind of late to do the trek we had originally planned so we had a couple of quick ones and headed back down to 211 and headed back. We will do it again and this time give EVERYONE an orientation on the entrance to Skyline.
