I was just eye-balling my mounts this evening and came to the same conclusion. Spread the support a bit over the plastic backing. My two mounting bolts to through the grommet-eyes built-in to the back so I think I'm pretty safe. (other two covered by the Saddlemen supplied rubber plugs)
