Well the Robertson screw is deinitely superior to the Phillips screw, it's just that at the time of the invention of the Phillips head, it was compatible with the assembly line tools in the automotive plants where it was first put to use.

I have seen Robertson screws in the US. I bought a set of bits by Makita, and there was about 3 different sizes of square bits in it. You usually see them used for building wooden decks onto houses.
