you can also whack the top triple clamp with a mallet, which will put some downforce on it...I did this while lowering the motorcycle jack with one foot. Kinda an akward but coordinated move.

I actually put one mallet against the clamp, and hit the rubber mallet with another mallet so not to damage anything.
