You should get the bike on a bike jack and take the load off the forks (bike will not be in the air, but have no weight on front end), then loosen them, then lower the bike down onto the forks. You may have to tap the forks from the bottom to get them to slide up in the trees.
This will quicken the steering a bit. I did it to my Bonneville and it handles better. You will probably want to do it an inch at most. It does look great!
