Would this work on our bikes? I cant visualize with out an idea of the size and mounting and all. But, it looks nice in the pic.

A horn is a horn is a horn. But they don't give a db rating, so if it goes "meep meep" like the stocker, all you gain is a little more shine.

It is good looking. Maybe I'll have to order one for the

I have that horn. It fits our bikes with no modifications. Looks good and though it lacks any real authority, it is louder than stock or sportster horns. I'm happy enough with it to not be embarrased to use it as I was with the stock.

Hey Tom,
Thanks for the info, I'll get one.
Is Greenwich, New York in England?
We have a Greenwich, CT, and New York,
here in the colonies. I'm easily confused.

I bought one of those horns. The finish isn't that great but it looks funkier than the stocker. Not much louder than stock. I got sick of people in SUV's trying to run me over and bought this horn instead, which terrifies soccer moms at 100 yards. It can also be easilly fitted in the standard position.

Did you have to wire a relay for the stebel?

I would wire up a relay for anything bigger or louder than the stock horns.

My father-in-law has an old BMW R 100 S with fairing. I rode it a couple of weeks ago and when I blew the horn, it was scary. I'm not sure how loud the horn was to others, but being mounted inside the fairing with the rider, it was super loud to me. The pitiful stock beep-beep on my BA isn't in the same league. I'll be looking to upgrade.

That's a very big yes. The standard horn wiring routes straight through the horn button which is nothing more than a couple of tiny copper contacts. That's fine with the 1-2 amps the stocker pulls, but with the 10 or so amps for the stebel (or pretty much ANY real horn) they'd probably weld themselves together the first time you used it. However putting a relay in is nothing for even the most electrically inept to fear.

If you've taken off the AI (as most of us have) you've got a pre-made mounting point for the relay where the AI pump fits. Just re-route the standard horn wires to the relay, run a new wire from the battery positive to the relay, and from the relay top the new horn. Earth the horn to its mounting bolt. It's a good idea to put in a 20A fuse in the new horn wire as close to the battery as possible, you can get pre-wired, waterproof fuse holders from any decent car parts place, or you can use a relay with it's own fuse holder built in.

If you get yourself a cheapy crimping tool and some crimped terminals (female blade terminals for the relay & horn, and a large eyelet terminal for the battery post) plus a fused relay you don't even need soldering skills. Try to get insulated terminals and you won't even need tape or heatshrink. It doesn't get any easier than this.

Here is a photo of the Strebel horn on my bike.

I got mine from Twisted Throttle, that is the link that Sandmann included. There is a chrome available too. REALLY LOUD

Yeah, they're a dog-ugly horn, but if you get em tucked right up behind the forks you can't really see them without crawling under the bike.

I'd avoid the chrome version - the "compact" one doesn't come in chrome - only the full sized one - and according to twisted throttle the chrome peels off and looks even uglier in a short time.

Mine is mounted in the same place as the one above. Not overly noticable for the most part but the job it does is worth the price of being ugly. Also saw one at Advance Auto made by flamm that look right close to it but was $49.95. The Stabel was $42 shipped in. Love my horn, and my LED dash lights

Dunno.. my bike doesn't wear a cod piece However the dimensions are (according to the website) 5.9" (150mm) x 4.4" (112mm) x 3.7" (95 mm).

Todd,
Look on Ebay for a Harley horn. You can put it in the same place and it sounds like a car horn. I has a nice chrome cover and you use the same wires.

You can mount them where the airbox was if you're freaked out.

Yep, my Stebel fit in right nice under the seat without the airbox. Makes it easier to run the wires too since it's close to the battery.

And the carb vacuum line too? Don't they use that to charge the compressor?

Nope, it's all electric. The air pressure is generated when you hit the horn. There is a delay just long enough that if you tap the button very quickly the sound produced is about equal to a regular horn. If you hold it at all it is LOUD.

As for being ugly, well yeah, it's not pretty but so far no one has noticed it unless I honk it. Tucked up where it is, and being mostly flat black and non-shiny metal, it's pretty unobtrusive unless it is used. Being out in the open also allows it to be louder. The sound vibrations are emparted to the air rather than the body of the motorcycle. Putting it under the seat would muffle the sound significantly and much of the energy produced would be used making the seat vibrate. While that may appeal to some, the horn would still attract a lot of attention

The other point to note about them is that because they suck air in and push it through a compressor they're vulnerable to the elements... putting dirt, bugs, water etc through a compressor is never a good idea (mmm compressed bug juice!) so they include a push-on fitting for the air intake that lets you put a rubber tube on and route it to someplace less umm "elemental". Under the tank's an idea. I've yet to do this on mine but it'll make the horn last a lot longer.

I can't imagine it being that much louder out in the open. Mine isn't muffled at all under the seat. Just ask the cager I blasted yesterday that was pulling into my lane on I-19.

Btw, it doesn't vibrate the seat either. If it did I'd do the mod myself on all the bikes for the women that wanted it.

Just went and took a quick pic of the horn. Yesterday I rode home in a bit of rain with wet roads for 20 miles of it. Haven't cleaned this part of the bike since I installed the horn. I've probably ridden in the rain 4 or 5 times since I installed the horn. It's a bit dirty, but not bad.

The relay is just in front of the horn. To the right of the horn relay is the inline fuse coming off the battery. The ground wire, which I need to get a terminal for, is to the right of the horn mount and attached to the other bolt that holds the rear fender on. If you look closely, you can see the plate from the Freak kit(where the toolbox normally sits) does a good job providing protection from from anything getting to the horn...mud, dirt, rain, etc.

I've found 4 or 5 nice used Harley Davidson horns on eBay. I was told by one of the sellers that the horn pulls 4 amps, I know my stocker (05 America) pulls 3 amps. Has anyone here tried a 4 amp Harley horn? I'm curious whether or not it will blow the fuse or melt my horn switch.

Thanks
~John~

You can get one like that at Custom Chrome for around 10 bucks. This pair of horns http://www.shopv-twincycles.com/shop/pro...CFST9YAodaGpIfg
can be bolted under where the Triumph lightbar goes and they work well, especially if you use the relay.

Coworker was asking about my Stebel this morning, not for his GW, but for his wife's Honda 750 cruiser.
A quick search turned up a Stebel with installation kit. This is the first one I've seen with an install kit that looks pretty complete.

I think the Stebel is the loudest horn on the market.
