Like Runner says, try it without removing them. My suggestion of removing them was what worked for me when I just couldn't get all the air out of the rear system. But if you do take the caliper off the disc, yes, you need to put something (piece of wood, something that won't damage anything) in there to take up the space.
I just assumed that was a "given".....
