QUESTION: would it make any sense to trade in a '06 with the 790cc for the newer version with the 865?
IMO I wouldn't do that trade. Like others say, there'll be a lot of interest if Triumph comes out with a "mid-sized engine". Depending on the configuration, especially water cooled etc.
On a side note it's interesting how our definition of "size" has evolved. I was listening to all night trucker radio last week and a techy guy was saying how 30+ years ago OTR rigs were in the 165 Hp class, now we're pushing +300 Hp, pulling the same loads on the same roads. I know folks around here, with a couple acres and 2 horses, driving dually wheeled, 4WD diesel powered pickups.
Having ranted on that, a middle sized cruiser should do well in the marketplace. Triumph seems to be making carefully considered decisions since the resurrection. Myself, it would take a lot to part with the 790. Too much investment and add-ons. Besides, it suits me and seems to run better all the time . I'd consider a Tiger or something along those lines, then I'd have to buy Cortech gear
