I got a nice surprise from me boss today. He called me into his office and told me his superiors wanted a "dedicated" deserving representative of our company to attend the change of command ceremony at Pearl Harbor for USS Tucson (SSN-770) at the end of this month. My wife and I get an all expenses paid trip to Pearl!
I have not been to Hawaii since I was 20 years old. Should be fun. I may look into renting a bike for a day whilst we are there.
SSN-770 is the second Navy vessel to carry the moniker of "Tucson" and the only submarine. She began manufacture in 1988 , her keel was laid in 1991 and she was christened in March of 1994. She carries directional control valves of many types manufactured here at our Tucson site.
She is of the new "improved" variety of Los Angeles class attack subs sporting an ample number of vertical tubes for Tomahawk cruise missiles. She has put a hurt on some terrorists in her as of yet still young span of service.

Enjoy, I just got back from Hawaii (the slow way) via the USNS WATERS. I worked on the Tuson during its construction, and rode it during the builder sea trials. I have about 270 days at sea on submarines, with most of them being on 688 class subs.
The Tuson is technically a fourth flight 688. First flight 688's were absorbed into second flight when they went through overhaul. Third flight 688's (starting with the SNN 719, USNS Providence) with the 16 vertical launch Tomahawk tubes and the fourth flight having bow planes instead of the sail planes. There are numerous other changes but these are the big ones that can be easily observed.

Well. My reputation at work as far as relations with other departments over the years reads like a criminal rap sheet. Fortunately I am appreciated by those whose "reputations" and positions depend on "earnings" and monthly shipments and improving and or maintaining inventory turns. I am the prototypical "pusher" ...a relic from yesteryear. Hated by all but yet when the chips are down the powers that be "always" want me in their foxhole. They dont necessarily even "like me" but they know a "warrior" when they see one.

Kevin, Have a great trip. We need more workhorses like you seem to be in our country. The "go to" person who gets things done.If you would, say a silent thanks when you get to Pearl for all who died there(and since) for our continued freedom.

Ha! Our tax dollars at work, eh? If that's the case, then you'd better have a great time and take some photos for us all to see, otherwise I'd feel like I'm wasting MY money!! Enjoy, dude
If life wasn't so pointless and absurd, I would take it more seriously.
