I just got a Triumph leather gas tank cover (with handy pocket to put my cell phone) for my '05 SM. So from the picture it looked like a no-brainer to install (just fit it around the center of the tank and tie down the end by the seat)....but nooooo. Does the whole top of the tank have to be removed to fit the tank cover? Anybody do it themselves? Why does everything have to be so %#$@ over-engineered? OK, I'm better now, thanks.

it is pretty easy. I take mine off all of the time. Just unscrew the 3 allen screws on the console and disconnect the plug. It pops right off.

I know it seems over engineered but it really helps hold it down.

Thanks, I'll give it a try tomorrow...after I go buy a new set of allen wrenches!

the one on your fuse cover should work.

The plastic cover under the keyhole pulls off and there is a 5 or 6 mm allen wrench attached to it. It will take off the seat, the console and a few other bolts here and there.

Thanks for the advice. I got a burst of energy at 9:30pm and it took all of 5 minutes to install the tank cover. Of course I had to polish the console and the tank when I finished.... OK, I take it back. It was engineered perfectly!
