This one could be different, but my experience with oil lights in the past has been that it is really a "trashed engine" indicator. My first experience with idiot lights was a '55 Ford 6. On a fishing trip, the bit of hex rod that drives the oil pump stripped. First, the engine started knocking. Then, maybe 1/4 mile later, the oil light came on. Fortunately, the warantee was still in effect.
