Got a call from my wife today that my nine year old third grader was running a fever and needed to be picked up at school. Have spent the last five hours alternately pumping him full of fluids and childrens motrin. Fever has peaked (it always does at night) at just under 103 and is now at 101.2 I guess I'll spend the rest of this night making sure he gets fluids and that the fever doesn't get too high. In the morning, the wife will take him to the doctor and get him checked out. He can't seem to keep anything down and that makes me worry about dehydration. I guess school really is back in because the kids are all trading germs again. Good thing I don't go to work till 1pm tomorrow, at least I'll get a chance to get a little sleep in the am! In the meantime, I'm browsing the forums and keeping an eye on the little one.

Hey Randy,
Don't forget a cool bath can help keep the fever down. It especially helps when they are having trouble keeping things down. I have stayed up many a late night with my children in these situations.

Yeah, I would try a bath to put him under 100 but doesn't your body's heat actually help kill the little buggers? What about ginger ale? Anyone remember why that is supposed to help? Something about digestive processes...

Ginger ale or 7up helps with stomach ailments. Also, the sugar helps keep up energy. Granny's wisdom was "feed a cold, starve a fever". If there is a relaps (often happens during the day) and the fever fets up around 103 again, a full body wipedown with cool (not cold!) water mixed with a bit of rubbing alcohol will help keep it under control. As best I can remember, 103F is a critical point beyond which, physical damage can occure. Above all, keep the head cool.

Keep an eye on the fever, but remember that's the body's way of fighting infection. You just don't want it to get too high. Ginger has long been known to be an anti-nausea remedy, so ginger ale can be easier to keep down than other liquids. You might even try some ginger tea (the tannic acid in tea also has anti-nausea properties). Just add a half teaspoon of powdered ginger to a cup of tea sweetened to taste, works wonders.

Hey Red, heat can get my body temp up real fast with the MS, and I find what cools me down real fast is something cool on the back of my neck. Beer bottles work, but for him, maybe a can of ginger ale Or an ice pack... Keep up the good fight!

While you're using all this chemical science, don't forget physical science. A 7-11 Slurpee will do wonders for reducing his fever. Kids like the taste and love turning their tounges weird colors. Good luck.

Colloidal Silver - My family hasn't been sick in over 5 years. Health Food stores have it at $10 for 8 ounces, but I make mine at $50 for about 80 gallons. It's also safer to make it yourself.

Well we did the cool bath thing to bring his temp down and it worked pretty well. Nothing would stay in him long, even the ginger ale. He was a real trooper though. Every time he lost it, he'd rinse his mouth and drink another cup of whatever we pushed his way. Finally stopped getting sick around 5am. Wife stayed home with him and now he is getting much better. School nurse says everyone is coming down with it, some kind of stomach virus. Tonight, my wife is starting to do the same thing! I guess I'm doomed...

OK, I'll say it again. Colloidal Silver. Or you can go ahead and be sick.

Hey Red, Sorry to hear about the wee little one. I am a Physician Assistant and also live on the Treasure Coast. It is probably a Viral infection and the best medicine is tincture of time. You are doing the right things, hydration, analgesic(Motrin) for aches pains and temp. Some literature says not to treat a temp unless it gets above 102 and won't respond to Tylenol or Motrin. I thought this was torture for a little kid and a soon as my kids hit 100 I would pour on the Tylenol. Just makes sure his mouth looks moist and his eyes look moist under the lids. If they are, he is hydrated. Stay away from all dairy products and just rest his gut for few days with a very bland diet once he can tolerate food. Those little ones are tough, he will bounce back soon. just think of it as his immune system just got a boost for future bugs he will be exposed to. Take Care Mark
