Mine had gone gold near the clamp, I took them off this weekend and was able to polish the gold off with out too much effort. I used some agressive paint polish that is made for getting out bad swirl marks and it worked like a charm. Didn't scratch the chrome and it took the gold off easily. It "should" be safe for the pipes, but if they turn black and fall off in a month, I guess I'll know not to use it again.
