Well, sharing our same interests in the Triumphs is why I come here -- it brings many different backgrounds of people together. I think politics are a separate issue and I vote for a separate forum for people to visit if that is their cup of tea.

FJ,

It's my impression that threads sometimes begin with one issue and migrate to something else. Much like a conversation on the sidewalk. People express what is important to them, or humorous, or simply off-beat. Trying to define that seems as challenging as writing a high school/workplace dress code that everyone accepts. I also think it's important that discussions stay "issue based" whatever the topic at hand. We always get into trouble when the line to making it personal is crossed. Overall, I don't mind reading other opinions. For the most part, I believe people here give them some thought.

It seems everyone is being on their good behavior this "go-around", not unlike walking into a real clean house and taking your shoes off at the door. Maybe we're fortunate that Robert re-worked the boards in the doldrums of January and not two weeks ahead of the general election. OK, you tropical/desert types don't have winter doldrum to contend with.

In the end, I am here to learn bike stuff from the various forums and share where I am able to. This seems to be a decent collection of people. The knowledge, experience and resource links members have shared have been valuable to me. Well, not that valuable since they end up costing me a dollar or two.

....how about a forum for the keyboard challenged? We have a UBC (United Building Center) around here, but no UBB. Got the BLOG thing defined, but I thought "off-site storage" was the tool shed out back?? Like Grump, I feel passed by at times with the technology, but take great pride in stubborness, which my people view as a measure of character.

Now I can't remember how I voted. Who was on the libertarian ticket?

john

I voted yes to this forum. Why the heck not? this board has thirteen forums, and if all would use them correctly, I suspect "lounge" would have a close to even number of threads as some of the others. I quickly perused the threads and found several that belong somewhere else, I notice that you have moved some of them . As for going to other boards to discuss religion, politics, etctera, what's the point? Those boards are populated by people to whom those issues are what binds them. This is a motorcycle board, yes. It is a board dedicated to one particular motorcycle. It is, however, populated by diverse people with different opinions, and variety is the spice of life, (that's what the judge is gonna tell my wife). How much whining about the weather can anyone do anyway? Hey, it snowed and rained here ALL last weekend , so I couldn't ride either. I feel your pain !! Thank God winter's over . And besides maybe one of those ignorant know-it-alls will actually see the light and realise the error of his or her ways .

Hi Jeff, glad to hear from you again. Yep, decided a new name for a new board. Bayern is German for Bavaria, that part of Germany where Munich is, and one of my favorite places (where Beer is protected in the CONSTITUTION!!!!). I have been very fortunate in my job to visit there many times, and could actually see myself living there if fortune swung my way. 710 is the Hull Number of my old Boat, the USS Augusta, a LA Class Fast Attack sub that I spent 4 years on. Since then, that number has repeatedly come up in my life, it's the last 3 digits of my phone extension at work, on my drivers license, among other places. Thanks for the feedback on the discussions. I doubt I will be able to swear off hot topics altogether, but I have a problem with people hating me. Don't get me wrong, I don't strive to have everyone like me (if I did, I would never speak my peace in public), but to have people actually hate me because of my beliefs, kind of bugs me. It's not a feeling I like. We'll see, like I said, I doubt I can give it up altogether, but will probably give it a second thought before jumping in next time. Hope you had a good ride into the New Year. With the exception of a minor fender bender (literally), mine was great!

I think off topic threads are fine, I pesonally would get pretty bored if all we ever talked about was bikes. I find no better place for discussion then in the lounge. Its warm, cozy and comfortable. By the way, mines a Pint of Pride, or a Crown Royal with a hint of ice.

Now, while were off topic, did any one happen to see the Arsenal play on saturday....man they were awful. There goes the championship.

hi greg -

would not have known you'd replied had i not read 100 threads. gotta figure out how to get my messages into my e-mails again.

hey - screw the people who hate you !! your opinion on any subject is as valid as theirs.

i disagree with you plenty but respect your right to voice whats on your mind. this 'like minded people' crapola is just an extension of the 'political correctness' garbage that has turned this country into a mass of idiots without a seeming personalty. who wants friends that exude a 'home, home on the range' attitude? boring & phony is closer to the truth regards such types. the only thing 'like minded' about any site member is the common thread we share regards appreciation of motorcycles.

those who get along without any viewpoint in life aren't worth knowing.

continue to challenge me regards ANY subject. makes my day to hear from people who don't agree with all i say.

I prefer off-topics in an off-topic section. Sometimes people need a place to get non-bike advice or consolation or get a load off their minds. What better place than asking fellow bikers?

I am sure there will be some nasty arguments, but you can't lock up everybody out of fear they may commit an infraction.

Keep religion and politics somewhere else. Anything else goes in my book. Bikes of any kind are cool on a motorcycle oriented site. Even cars, music, food, whatever, but talk of the great spook daddy and spooky DC daddies belong elsewhere IMHO!! We have a lot of members from all over the world and a lot of different belief systems and if it's kept close to the one thing we are all here for, it'll work. As it has for the past few years before the politics started creeping into the boards.

Well, this is my first post on the new site. A thousand excuses for not being around but busy with work is the best. Anyhow, here's my tuppence worth. While Robert created this board as place to share bike related stuff, many of us have developed relationships through the board. As such, we have many things to discuss that are only tangentally or completely unrelated to our bikes. Just like in the real world. As such, I see no problem with off topic posts with the following considerations. That is, I think it should be relegated to a specific forum and IF the board can handle the traffic. Robert should not have to continually upgrade just so we can chat about whatever. But if the site can contain it...no blood, no foul.

AI removal, chrome, tyres, light bar, carb set up,tyres, oil, etc etc. These topics and many more relating to the BA have been discussed many times on this great sight, however, the BA is made of a finite number of parts. Some of the most amusing and informative threads iv read have been the off topic type. Variety is is what makes this site so special.

At first I felt this site should only be about bikes. However, after reading different posts I find friendships being made. As a group of friends, fellow limey lovers, a club if you will, we should be able to share ideals. If you dont want to read the stuff you dont have to.

The poll is over and it appears that "free for all" is the winning opinion. What does this mean? Well, nothing, really.

IMHO, the object of the poll was not to set some sort of editorial policy. If anything that's up to Robert.

No, the purpose was to get everyone thinking about what is and what is not appropriate. Politics are definitely off-topic. Is it allowed, well, yes, as long as everyone more or less behaves themselves, and continues to exercise a modicum of restraint, civility and mutual respect (or at least tolerance). Our moderation policy is pretty light-handed. Our biggest goal is enforcing the reorganization of the few old forum topics into the many new forum topics. This too, has ruffled some feathers but I think you'll see in the long run it's for the better.

As always, if you disagree, feel free to contact the boss. I'm only following his orders in the first place.

"Thank you for your support."

What's a modicum anyway? I seem to remember a post graduate veterinarian at Utah State once asking for a "modicum" while assisting with routine surgery.
That's as bad a Dinqua using "vagaries" in another thread!!" I think vagary may be an out of work Libertarian, or an unexplainable deviation from normal. Where's my Webster's? This thread is becoming a canundrum.

Talk about off-topic! Point taken. "****" brit bike owners.

So when I recently walked into Mike Tingley's Triumph and I admitted to Betty that the 02 BA parked on the floor two years ago was sold before she had a chance to say a word, that was a "vagary"? Perhaps 'sudden', but the 'impulse' part had it's peculiar, twisted origins 30 years ago.

As far as the 'Pat's frozen brains' comment, I think you are trying to start trouble and that's against a "moderator's code of ethics". Leave that to the local riff-raff and we huddled northern masses.

A Hammer of Smiting! Excellent. That might be exactly what I'm looking for the local water jet cutter to put on the blank aluminum plate I'm using for a sissy bar extension. Besides "Hammer of Smiting" would counteract the term "sissy bar".

Being a third generation removed Norwegian, my mythology is a bit rusty. Isn't that what old Thor carried around on his toolbelt? I bet the Scandinavian brothers could shed some first-hand knowledge.

Yep, Thor had this hammer that came back after crushing a giant's head. It's name was Mjolner. If I remember correctly he also carried a Leatherman Tool...

See! I knew if I asked a Scandinavian I straight question, I'd get a straight answer. Let that be a lesson to the rest of you. It's genetically impossible for a Scandinavian to tell an untruth. But if it's all the same to you Piper, I think I'll go for the Thor's hammer and not the leatherman. He mighta' bought one of those cheapo imitation kind from a truck stop during his travels.

Phil - we have a couple of fabricators with that technology, I don't know if it's the same the quarreling father/son team features on motel cable tv, but I think the results are similar. Some kind of custom thing (like Mjolner) would be alright.

Yes, forum should be appropriate for any comment that isn't profane or illegal as long as common courtesy is employed. Moderation is still necessary and good, but we should be able to choose what we want to discuss in an open forum. Participation isn't mandatory after all.
