I read in the Austin newspaper(a fountain of knowledge) that it takes more energy to refine a gallon of ethanol than that gallon of ethanol produces. The article also said that all of the corn in the US would only supply a tiny fraction of our needs? Anyone know if this is true?
May be, but ethanol has other, more interesting uses

Yes, I have over 21,000 miles, mostly with ethanol blended gas. Never a fuel problem
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
