I still go to 'those kind of bars' once in a while, but I've toned it down a mite in my muddled age. Lap dances just hold the same thrill as they used to. Now, my BROTHER... HE'S another story.

i find this hole thing funny... and i did ask you to enforce a rule allready in place..and that is all i did..you guys the mod's have now moved on to make new rule's cool go for it!!! but i want you to think about this.
you guys could have put this up for a vote..this site does have that function..and i have to say that i would have voted with you guys on this one...but the fact that you did not even give us the chance to vote on it..is what i find wrong.. when we first started this site FriarJohn gave us all the chance to vote on this..and it went the other way..but it has been a couple of years so why not put it to a vote again..the hole group should of had a say in this one not just a select few!!!

BIKER!!!

Here, here Friarjohn. I think it was the best decision that could be made to keep the peace.
Thank you moderators.
Those that are po'd about the rule changes can start their on web site.
So can we get back to the topic of motorcycle discussion!

Which "hole thing" are you referring to? I really don't want to speculate...

The poll was approximately a year and a half ago and the culture and climate of this site has changed dramatically. I did it as a COURTESY, not an ENTITLEMENT (n.b., democracy vs. benevolent dictatorship).

(and IIRC, that poll was as much a test of the polling function of the new forum software as it was a genuine solicitation of opinion)

UPDATED

Here's the poll:

http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...ch=true#Post948

It begins, "Gotta try out the polling feature now. Since politics was mentioned (a couple times) I've an idea for a poll."

Doesn't mean that it meant a damn3d thing. Thank you for playing.

BTW, I'm not saying you're wrong and I don't envy you having to read all the posts, but I do think past suggestions about having a Political Posts area isn't bad, but it doesn't alleviate your having to read posts... But poeple who enter, enter at their own risk-- kind of like the bars I used to go to.

Cat, your post brought something to mind. Us moderators WANT to read all the posts! More accurately, we want all the posts to be of relevant, interesting topics. Like it used to be. But seeing as some of us HAVE to read all the posts, it can get laborious fast. Again, rather than putting it upon US to make a separate place for you all to have at it, how bout someone else start one up. Link it, call it something similar, I don't care! But rather than making all these suggestions and expecting us/other people to accomodate you, how bout being proactive?

Here's my two cents:

I stumbled on this site after a google search for TBA after
having this bike for about 2 years. I wish I'd found it
sooner. But, I wasn't looking for politicalarguments.com.

If I wanna get aggravated, I'll go to work, or turn on the
NEWS.I came here to talk about bikes, and bike related stuff.
The information, knowledge, and experiences, people
here have shared with me are priceless. Not to mention the
the new friendships I've made this year since I've joined,
and the rides I've already been on.(looking forward to NE
Rally).

I'm not sure how many mods there are(I think 10), but, I
spent last Sunday with 2 of them(20%?). A total of about 7
of us spent a wonderfull afternoon together, talking about a
bunch of stuff. Some talk of bikes, but mostly about music,
no politics, religion, soccer, football(USA), baseball, or
whatever. Just hanging out with folks that share similar
interests, enjoying each others company. This is what it's
all about.

I'm sick of the bickering, and arguing, and support the
moderators 100%, I don't want to read all that crap either.

Peace,
Uncle Charlie

I don't come here for religion or politics. I don't want to hear anyone else's opinion unless its exactly like mine anyway. 9 pages? Gimme a break. I'd much rather learn why I need a backlash gear on my cams and do aftermarket cams have them.

I wouldn't give BrokeBackPorch too much credit. This has been building for quite some time. I've suggested just this very ban to the rest of the moderators a time or two myself.

That's A GREAT IDEA.

This bar didn't shut down, they just stopped serving the firewater that the more violent drunks prefer.

Well I don't particularly think that any of this has to do with Backporch.. and if he thinks so then he is a bigger fool than he's made himself out to be. I think it has more to do with the resignation of a long standing and much respected moderator who put a lot of time in the trenches trying to keep this a pleasant place to be. FJ is a man wise beyond his years and his patience insight will be very much missed in the lounge.

But for every pat on the back we get in public forum, there are 5 pm's from members who don't like a certain picture or topics or they can't figure out the search feature or some other time consuming task. It's a balancing act that gets pretty stressful at times.. do we allow this pic? how about that one? These are the things you don't see that demand our time.. our personal/family/riding time.

Members can talk about anything in the lounge, music, cars, family and pretty much whatever you'd like and all we ask is that your discussions provide a positive and relaxed atmosphere. We're bikers.. we ride to relax...at least I do. This is the clubhouse folks not the country club.. and it is simply not the place for heated political/religious debate.

Finally.. I resent being referred to as a communist and take offense to that statement.

I am an American.. right down the line so don't propose to call me a communist from the judgement of a single act. In fact if this were a communist movement we wouldn't be reading this post right now.. we would simply remove all the negative remarks and keep the positive ones. Instead we are letting you speak your mind about the changes .. is that not as American as it gets?

And as far as driving away members, how many people do you think have lurked here, taken one look at some of the BS in the lounge and left? We almost lost Gina a while back, who else? It is impossible to know and to see if it benifits those lurkers more than the few who feel so utterly betrayed by not being able to talk about a few things here.

You nearly lost me again yesterday.... I still have the email saved in my drafts box.

(And yeah I can hear some of you saying good at the back...)

As others have said, I come here for a chat, to find stuff out about my bike, and occasionaly try and meet up with other members... Those I have met, either in the flesh, or those I've had a chat with in cyberspace are really nice people and life is better for knnowing them. (OK don't let your heads grow too big....you still have to get out the door occasionally)
But I really object to the name calling, political, religious and other stuff. OK so I'm policallly ambivalent (some may say thats the worst thing to be, I just don't believe any one party is good for this country at the mo.) atheist, and a hippy.

Where's the hippy bit fit in?

I just want every one to love one another and be happy.

That's the hippy bit.

I'm still here...

I'd love to come over, but work gets in the way...

I have to keep them sweet, I haven't told them I want 3 weeks off in March/Arpil to go and see my nephew in Oz for his first birthday... Course I'll be hiring a bike over there...even found somewhere that'll loan out a SM...

But I haven't left. I was really trying not to come in here this morning, but habit prevailed... Then I saw the 'ban' and was slightly happier.

But I may hold you to the finding me a bike this time next year...
And thank you. The thought of actually being missed if I wasn't here makes me feel all fuzzy. And no, I have no wine so I haven't drunk any. I'm saving my liver for Saturday.

Frankly, I'm pondering the same thing Stone. Will I go, probably not, but I don't see much point either coming around as much to talk about worn out topics like jetting, sorry! I love my bike a LOT, and I've always enjoyed coming here for the variety of opinions and frank, open discussion, it's just my opinion that this place will become about as exciting as a glass of water without a little firewater (as FJ put it) once in a while... Just my 2 cents.

I appreciate the sentiment. The decision to ban politics and religion may or may not have been triggered by my resignation, I wasn't there. But to be clear, the ongoing holy war in the Lounge was not why I resigned (don'tchy'all flatter yourselves). I have personal reasons for the decision but it doesn't mean I'm going away (as should be plain by my activity on this thread).

And anyone who thinks there won't be anything new to talk about here in the Lounge without those topics ...lacks imagination.

Sounds good Ed.. I'll be there Black TBA and old tired butt willing. I'm also glad you and Vicki are hosting the ride to Niagra, it looks like we'll be tagging along for that one instead of going to the Glen. Tough decision but it'd be a shame to be that close and not visit Canada eh?
Looking forward to it.. the rally that is.. not too sure about the ride but we do get to run some pretty cool roads so it's all good.

I wholeheartedly agree with the mods decision to modify the rules established on this site. Thank you, all. The fact that this didn't get a vote doesn't faze me in the least since I think it's a good move. If folks leave because of it, fine by me since I don't come here to talk about religion or politics. I started coming here because I was looking for a bike and wanted something different than the Jap clones and Harleys. I was drawn in by the enthusiasm and comraderie I found in the people posting about their america/speedmaster. That feeling I got plus seeing one of these bikes 'in the flesh' cemented the fact that I would have one of these bikes. Three years, 22000 miles, and 6 rallies (I included Daytona this year) later on my Speedie I still lurk and post here for those same reasons. Like Chy said, we should have a positive and relaxed atmosphere here. I don't think the religious/political threads did anything to foster that environment. If the only reason you came HERE is to talk about religion/politics/trolls then you came to the wrong place.

For those of you that might have forgotten, being a moderator is done a gratis (for free). If I volunteered to take on the job that these friends of mine have so graciously done then I wouldn't want to wade through all the crap that some folks write about incessantly either. A communist/fascist/dictatorist/whatever move? Please. This is a community of people who have come together because of their choice in motorcycles. No one is saying you can't talk about other stuff, just follow the guidelines established by those that make the rules HERE and find the appropriate venue for your views/rants elsewhere.

Wow. I don't usually get on here 'til after 6:30 PM, and look what's happened!! I think this thread has already broken several records .

My two cents (before this one gets shut down, though I hope it's a while. People to vent a little at major changes), I can certainly understand how tedious it must be for the mods to have to read the threads that get into rehashing the same arguments, Phil has said so on numerous occasions. That's probably the best reason for instituting the ban. While some may get hot under the collar sometimes, it should pass for most people, though some may carry grudges that can affect relationships, and that's never good.

My own posts in the religious/political arena have (always?) been reactive; I try to avoid starting anything, but have some difficulty holding my opinion when something strikes me as wrong.

Depending on the other participants in discussions, we can sometimes reach a level of mutual respect and adopt a live, and let live attitude, most times actually. I've never held grudges toward any of those with whom I've had heated exchanges, and hope they feel the same.
In fact, the first time I finally waded into one of those discussions was when Dwight posted some (to my feeling) derogatory comment about Christians in general. Being one, I had to respond. This led to a respectful discussion, and I now consider Dwight to be one of my friends, though we've never met in person.

So, I respect the decision of the mods. I would hope, however that you will keep the door open to revisiting your decision in the future if the board starts to get....well, boring

I find the ban silly. I understand how the work load can get and well appreciate how eliminating the threads that seem to be the busiest can reduse the workload makes the quality of life better for the mods. But what really is the fear of the free speech in these threads? Has there ever been an instance of real violence resulting from any of them? Would it be the sites fault if that did happen? Eliminating choice seems to take away the novelty and good of the site, it eliminates topics that actually has been binding those who have been involved together, for each side needs the other to make it work. But, so be it, lets make the best of what is left ( which is still pretty nice ).

As for those who say the topics "bothered" them, why? If you didnt like them, why read them, just move to the others. There seems to be an abundance of topics, they are the ones that will still remain ( and must have been the drawing card for you all along ), you didnt have to read the others, they didnt force you to read them, so why did they "bother" you, and why such joy that others will lose what they enjoy? Whatever.

As for the mods, I appreciate the site and the work you put into it. I completely understand that no matter how much you try, you cant please everyone, but, nonetheless, you offer a good product ( with or without certain topics ). As for the commie, facists, and other tags being thrown about, I find them too loosely used and not appropriate, nor fair.

Wow, I thought we were all adults here

"The removal of any topic/post is the decision of the moderator(s) and is not open to public discussion/debate."

I'm sorry guys but that's just a little bit too subjective for me. I've had a great time here, will probably drop in from time to time for some information, but regular visting hours are discontinued.

I don't want to bring up politics, and despite what Henrey says above... when I read the ban statement for some reason the word "Stalin" came to mind. All I can say is Bummer!

...In fact, the first time I finally waded into one of those discussions was when Dwight posted some (to my feeling) derogatory comment about Christians in general. Being one, I had to respond. This led to a respectful discussion, and I now consider Dwight to be one of my friends....

Okay! Seein' as this here thread seems to be the "last harrah" for anything even remotely(evidently) about THAT topic(dare I say politics here).....

....but Letterman tonight told a GREAT ONE(at least in my estimation), and so...here GOES.......
__________

"Did you people hear about President Bush goin' to the Harley-Davidson factory yesterday?"

"Yep! There was a picture of him in the News, sitting on one of their bikes."

"Hey?!!! Didn't the last president to MOUNT a HOG, get IMPEACHED???!!!"

Cheers,
Dwight

Popeye, I've lost 16lbs over the last 2 months, and you don't see me getting all grouchy, now do ya. Of course, I didn't give up beer (hey, I'm not INSANE!) so maybe that's the difference!

Just saw the new BAN. Wow. Surprising.
Of course I haven't read every post but I actually thought this forum was pretty tame with the LOUNGE concept working well? Most controversial posts seemed to be limited to the LOUNGE and the SUBJECT usually provide some clue to the nature of the post.

I am OK with the BAN but suspect as I become more experienced with my TBA the need to visit will be less and less...I hope not.
