It must , because you cant mention HD without someone saying something derogatory or antagonistic, might as well get rid of the other bikes section.

I think it's great our moderators are trying to keep forum on it's original purpose. The statement didn't say you couldn't say anything derogatory, common sense should prevail. This is a great forum for TA/SM owners to share all sorts of bike related information (fact, fiction, opinion, or humor). It shouldn't be a political or religious chat room.

A restriction of speech isnt a good thing. Never is. Those who participated in those issue threads knew what they were walking into, as did those who decided to not jump in. It seems an over the top reaction, but is the right of those who run the show. It will be interesting to see how it works.

I love politics/religion threads. However, it certainly detracts from the goal of this site. Those threads never end well, create hard feelings, and disrupt a "helping" attitude towards people who you've argued with in the past.

Although, with that said, I can see how if there are topics/threads created just to incite or tick off others, that isnt really a good thing to have on the board. But, you know, maybe I am too new here, but I had not witnessed any threads that seemed aimed at getting people riled just to do so (well, maybe the Triumph/gay thread, but other that that ).

There is a huge difference between expressing your opinion, trying to influence others to see things the way that you see them and what you believe VS. name calling, back-biting and flat out derogatory remarks towards another person for what they said, think or believe. Unfortunatley, the latter has seemed to happen more and more lately.

Oh shut up (that's irony, in case you're wondering). It's not a public site. It's privately owned. The risk in restricting topics on the site is that we'll lose people. You know what? Most of the people leaving are the troublemakers. Buh-bye now. Don't let the IP address hit you in the arse on the way out. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of places online where you can go hash out your own little myopic view of the world. Come back when you want to talk about motorcycles.
A couple years ago another site I used to frequent, 914club.com, was being torn apart by religious and political arguments. It was way worse than it was here. They banned those topics and saved the site. Now it thrives. Sometimes you have to curtail some freedoms to enhance others. It's like pruning a tree.
And whoever brought up the Harley bashing threads - last time I checked Harleys were still motorcycles (albeit highly overrated and way too heavily marketed). Harley hasn't filed for protected status as a religion yet (oh, crap, I shouldn't give them any ideas) so that makes them fair game.
(Moderators, feel free to delete this post as distruptive )

You do know the name of this site is Bonneville america.com, right? To truly get rid of other bikes section, no more talk of Sprints, scramblers or even speedies, hey they aint bonneville Americas, I know it sounds absurd, and i'm not into arguing about politics or religion, but I still should have the choice whether i partake or not. But who am I? To ban these, is political in itself, Did i just break the new rule? We shall see

Ya know ....its OK by me. I did not come to this forum looking for information on politics or religion or the debate thereof. I can find that aplenty in blogs internet wide.
I was in fact, very surprised to see so much extraterrestrial activity outside of bikes/Triumphs when I joined back in March.
Despite it being entertaining I can certainly live without it here.
It is a big pain for the mods and this will certainly lighten their load.

Hi FriarJohn. I thnk you may have miss understood me. I was just pointing out this could be .... thats COULD be ... the thin end of a wedge, and that our moderators should be aware of that. After all who polices the moderators? Their purpose is by definition to moderate what goes on here and I for one appreciate their efforts. Banning something all together though is a pretty severe form of moderation, and a definate escalation, especially in the lounge. I agree we have had a few obvious trolls over the years, but in the past we just ignored them. On the other hand a lot of the regular guys like to go off on one now and again, and sometimes its quite entertaining, I would hate to lose that because of a few trolls. Doesnt that mean the trolls win? A sadder popeye; PS Talking of Irony... isnt stopping political threads in itself political? - just a thought.

Very glad of the new guidelines, got so I couldn't go into lounge at all without a rise in blood pressure. Being a political junkie myself, I would compulsively read posts and totally destroy my serenity. LOL

You know, I'm pretty new here and I don't know the relationships that some folks here share, but this post seems really childish. I'd use other terms for it, but I'll play nice.
I understand that this is a free board that is privately owned. Therefore, I have no rights to post what I like without fear of repercussions. However, that being said, I never think it is a good idea to outright ban topics (for the most part). I see no problem with keeping certain topics out of certain forums, but to outright ban topics from a forum called "Lounge" seems to me to be overkill.
Yes, I know some people can't get over disagreements with regards to politics and religion. But just because some people can't doesn't mean that everyone should be banned from speaking about it. I compare it to some people who don't know enough to not drink and drive, so let's ban all driving. It's punishing the many for the sins of a few.
Again, yes I am aware that the operators and moderators of this forum can do what they like in regards to the rules. And that is their right to do so, I respect that. However, that means that I likely won't bother coming around much. I've been lurking for a while (well before I registered), and haven't posted much because I wanted to get a feel for the group's dynamic. Now that I've seen it, I probably won't be a very active member of the group. And that's if I even go so far as to consider myself part of the group to begin with.
In regards to the example of a forum being on the downside due to political and religious discussions, for every board you can name that has had a problem, I'm sure I can come up with at least 2 that don't experience those types of issues. It's all in how the group and the moderators choose to handle the few that can't play nice that decides how the board will survive.

Yes, this is true, BUT, as I have mentioned in the past when the subject of such bans has come up, having a good spirited argument/debate amongst FRIENDS here was kind of like getting together with your friends in a Pub and having the same kind of debate, albeit virtually. So, yeah, I can go elsewhere and debate this with other people, but I'd rather debate it here with people I "know" and all. As for me, I've had more than my fair share of very heated debates with Kevin and Larry and others, but never took it personally (well for the most part, but then I have fairly thick skin I guess). I'm sure I'll be told off but I think it's a shame to limit speech, and personally think things will be pretty boring once we've talked out all the carb mods we can talk about. That's my opinion, if you don't like it, so be it. Am I going to leave because of it, no! Is it going to be about as exciting as a bar on Sunday in South Carolina in the Lounge, my bet is yes. To each his own.

Yeah, one or two people argue the free-speech thing, but 98% of us just move on. Whatever happened to just locking out the sods who actually resorted to name-calling, bashing, etc...? Not trying to start a debate or rip your (meaning all the mods)decision, but asking an honest question.

FriarJohn has got it completely correct in my mind. This site/forum whatever ya wanna call it is not a democracy. Sometimes the "man in charge" needs to throw out the freedom of speech rule (flag burning just comes to mind here) and say this is my site and this is what I want here. It is not a publically held or pubically financed site to the best of my knowledge owned by all of us so we gotta go with what they person "at the top" decides. Personally I have no problem with this. Most of the time I completely disregarded many of the threads in the Longue area and have not bothered to visit this site lately due to the fact that it seems to have gone away from what first brought me here, my TBA (yup one of the black faster ones) quality infomation, ideas on ways to improve performance and looks, and a place to meet other owners of one of the best bikes ever made. Okay, I'm done now.

Okay! What happened around here? What did I miss while I was at work?(d*mn my boss for takin' internet access away last month)
I'll just venture a guess here, but I'll bet Your's Truly must have had somethin' to do with this turn of events here, huh?!

And you can still get all of that information in all the forums located below this one. How does banning certain subjects affect that in any way? I'm asking this honestly, because to me, the lounge is for everything else but the things you say you came here for in the first place.
You're right that this isn't a democracy. I don't see anyone here claiming it is. However, that doesn't change the fact that by implementing these rules that they are going to alienate some users here as well as future users. So, unless this site wants to be elitest, these rules may not be for the best. I only say 'may' because only time will tell. I for one can say that I don't spend much time around sites that do this. But that's my choice to make, just like it's the adminstration choice to enforce these bans *shrug*

Yup! And that is where content management should be dealt with. Instead of an allout banishment of some subjects, there should either be a separate forum for them or at least a requirement for the subject line to mark a thread at being about a "difficult" subject. Each individual member should have fair warning as to the nature of the thread and then decide for themselves whether to jump in or move on.
Consider my plight, I'll soon be living out in the country. My nearest neighbor lives maybe 1/2 mile away and works long hours. Where else will I have a chance to discuss politics and make fun of politicians, cops, lawyers and radicals?
