Lighter fluid will not harm paint, metal, or plastic. There is nothing abrasive about it. It causes the goo to dissolve and you can just wipe if off with a soft cloth. I also keep my windshield waxed with a carnuba liquid wax. The wax protects it and makes cleaning bug residue off very easy (wet towel).
