OK, don't laugh but I need a detail description on how to remove the back wheel from my bike. Can somebody assist? I need to remove it this evening.

Join the club. i gotta do it wednesday or thursday. All i can tell you is what i learned by asking. I was told to either remove the fender or remove the shocks. Removing the fender is so that the tire won't be blocked by the fender as you pull it out the back. removing the shocks is the other way to accomplish the same thing because this way the swingarm will stay down and you can jack the bike up high enough to get the tire out. I'm probably going to remove the shocks since it's very easy and quick. After you're done i'd like to hear what you found as far as obstacles or tricks to make it easier. I'm not looking forward to it myself.

Not near that complicated. Position the jack and raise slightly. Remove the brake caliper and tie up. Take the nut off the axle, remove the axle. Take chain off rear sprocket. Raise bike until tire clears. Roll it out.

Of course it should be mentioned the speedy alloy rim is probably a lot heavier than the america i would imagine.

Not just the best quality but:
diagram:

remove:

install:

EDITED TO ADD:
And a note of caution, I believe the exploded diagram shows the left side spacer installed flange-side outboard, and the detailed instructions show it flange side inboard. Both times I removed/replaced the rear tire I initially tried to install the spacer flange side inboard because it looked like it went that way (and it was a year between, enough time to forget). It looks right, but won't fit. The flange side must go outboard and the spacer will fit into the hub just a bit, enough to allow things to go back together.

BigBill, well I did it just like you said & so far no problems. We'll see when I go to put it back together.

That can be a little tougher. You have to roll the wheel under the raised bike as close to lined up as you can get, and slowly lower the bike.

An extra pair of hands helps also, holding all the spacers and adjusters and caliper mount in place.

I would think that if you can line it up you shouldn't need extra hands with the spacers and all that, no? I'm sure hoping so because i'll be doing this within the next 3 days. I don't see any problem lining it up, so if i'm right about this it should be a breeze. However, i'm not so stupid as to believe theres no chance some unforseen torturous obstacle won't crop up while attempting it. It's things like this that are the most attarctive to Mr Murphy. The bastage !

BigBill, again I followed your lead & while I worked at it a little bit & did have a second set of hands, it was relatively painless. Thanks for the assistance. I wouldn't want to have to change it on the road !!!

Removed lame scans. Better scans in gallery but I'm sure you don't need them now. Will delete shortly.

So, I'd like to hear from everybody on the going rate to have a back tire patched & a new tube put in. Of course it's off an America. I took the tire to the dealer & they charged me $98. I almost fell over.

That sounds about right, tho a bit over maybe. They all wanted around $65 per wheel just to mount and balance a new tire. so figure the cost of the rest and $98 isn't too off the mark. yeah, it's crazy and that whay i'm taking mine off and bringing them to the dealer. I paid $20 even to have the front monted and will do the back saturday for a total of $40 verses the $130 (more at some dealers) to do everything at the dealer.

It just amazes me. I can get a car tire patched for about $18. What gives with the motorcycle tire???

We're a captive audience... car shops and car tire shops have to stay competitive. The bike shops can pretty much charge what they want with a "you want it fixed or not?" attitude.

Bought a new tube and replaced it myself. Tube was about $12 I think. Took about 40 minutes and didn't remove the tire completely.

The high prices are for removing and re-installing the wheels too. Thats what you're seeing. The Ducati shop i brought mine to charged me $20 for mounting and new tire and balancing. A patch wouldn't likely be much more. The same shop i paid $20 too wanted $65 to mount and balance if they also had to remove the wheel.

I probably wouldn't have been so surprised if they removed the wheel & replaced it. I removed the wheel & replaced it after they fixed it. My Triumph dealer is in with BMW. They are really good to deal with but are a little pricey. While I can do a lot of what I pay them to do. I like to use them to help keep them in business I guess.

Finally got my rear tire mounted. I was almost shocked at how easy it was to remove the rear wheel. re-installing was simple too, tho far more time consuming. Even tho my jack doesn't have a incremental or fine adjustment on the release valve i was able to very slowly tirn it slightly to lower the bike so the axl holes in the swingarm lined up with the wheel. Sure feels nice running on new rubber !
