You won't believe this, but when this thread started I was telling my friend (a woman in her 20's - who is sitting right next to me, BTW) exactly what you have said (more or less verbatim) and then your post came up.
I experience the exact same thing more often than I find comfortable and I agree, it seems like they don't care and pull out right in front of you.
