I can't say which setup caused it and which relieved it, but the neddles believe it or not have had the most effect on resolving popping and backfire issues for me. I think a properly jetted bike won't pop or backfire. So it may just be that you need to get the bike jetted right. Also, maybe consider a differnt pilot since the screws aren't helping. Might just be the pilot size is too small to allow the screws enough range to rid the problem.
