Been on my job now here at Airtran Airways in Atlanta for 11 years now, and am considering a career move to join the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) if they will have me, and if it will work out. Rumor is, they are hiring 230 Safety Inspectors this year, but none for the Atlanta area, so I would probably have to relocate, and for $55,000 a year, that's a hard pill to swallow....Have decided to take the hit and take the job if it is offered to me here in Atlanta....still gonna apply for all,,the grass is always greener, right?

I sure hope so, one of my friends just moved to Atlanta, he's paying the same amount for apartment rent that some people down here are paying for their house notes. Hope it works out for you.

I applied with The FAA for the ASI positions. They are always open. You and I know how slow the FAA and the Gov't works. I re-applied in Jan 06. I got a response back in June saying they were interested but needed more Veteren Information. Sent the information back to them on the 14th of June. I should here from them in Maybe November.
Don't quit Airtran for the FAA,at least not until they make you a firm offer. They could take a year to respond. And by the way the On-line Application will take you all day or night and lots of beer.

Doc, I could be wrong but with the government different areas of the US will result in higher or lower "locality pay" to accomodate cost of living.

They do adjust for cost of living in certain areas. So the salery should be more in Atlanta.

Just fed up with the PPM (****** Poor Management) here at present job. They sent 2 mechanics to Flint, Michigan for a simple 3 hour fix, sending 2 more mechs, that are equally as incompetent to replace them, because the original 2 could'nt fix it....and they'll get like 19 hours overtime for not being able to do their job....and no-one is held accountable, thanks to the Union...UNBELIEVABLE.

I hear ya! ATA is now down to 130 mechanics. Everything for Heavy maintenance is being outsourced to San Antonio Aerospace. A contractor, lower pay, no union but they don't care its not their airplanes they are fixing.
I will soon be unemployed because of incompetant management.

In some cases the government is worse. But overall the FAA is a good job.

I've been an ASI for a few years and one very good thing is job security. If you do get picked up it's very possible to get back to where you want to go after a year or 2. The govt employees who complain the most are the ones who've never worked in industry. For the most part the guys try to do their best within the constraints placed on them.

This is not good to hear...wife and I fly AirTran from Kansas City to Atlanta and drive down to Ft. Benning to visit daughter, son-in-law and grandkids. Tried Delta, but they seem to lose luggage! Maybe I'd better choose lost luggage rather than a lost plane!

It's cool, these airplanes are all brand new, and none are ever returned to service without a thorough checkoout of the state of the art systems (if it's not right, the computers will not allow operation) by 2 of our maintenance departments, and the flight crew themselves, believe me, if it isnt 100%, they won't take the airplane....

UPS or FedEx your luggage a couple days before you fly out. This does more than insure your belongings get there when you want them: it makes you cut down on the size and amount of your "stuff". (Usually easy for a man; almost impossible for a woman.)
